NICHOLAS KATZENBACH

KATZENBACH--Nicholas deB. A Vera Institute of Justice trustee from 1969 to 1983 and subsequently honorary trustee until his death, Mr. Katzenbach was best known to the public for personally facing down the Alabama governor in the fight for desegregation. His lifelong bravery and commitment to equal rights were demonstrated less publicly when he helped plan and became the first board chair of the Brooklyn-based Addiction Research and Treatment Corporation, which Vera helped create in 1969. The Vera Institute was honored to have Mr. Katzenbach deliver its first Justice Address in 2007 and joins the larger social-justice community in mourning his death.
