MONTGOMERY--Robert Langford Jr., 85, died at his home in Newport Beach, CA on February 26, 2013 after a long illness. Raised in Connecticut, he graduated from St. Paul's School and served in the Navy during World War II
. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1950, and after a Fulbright Fellowship in France, returned to Harvard where he received his PhD in 1956. He then taught at the University of Texas
at Austin, and at Williams College, before joining the University of California - Irvine, two years after its founding, as a professor of English and comparative literature. He retired in 1994. He leaves his wife of almost 62 years, Margaret (Peggy) Kimball, a daughter Alexandra, two sons, Robert III and Carleton, four grandchildren and his sister, Diane Ferris.
