HOWLAND ROGERS Obituary

ROGERS--Howland P. Howland Pendleton ("Pen") Rogers passed away peacefully on Monday, May 19, 2014, at his home in Hobe Sound, Florida. Born in New York City on July 11, 1922, to Henry Pendleton Rogers, Jr. and Gladys Pell, he grew up in New York City and Tuxedo Park, New York. His ancestors included Elbridge T. Gerry, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and fifth Vice President of the United States; Nathaniel Pendleton, an officer in the Continental Army who was Alexander Hamilton's second in his duel with Aaron Burr; and Albert Gallatin, who, as Secretary of the Treasury under Thomas Jefferson, financed the Lewis & Clark Expedition and later was a founder of New York University. A graduate of the Brooks School and Harvard University, Pen joined the Army in 1944; a member of the 32nd Infantry Division serving in the Pacific, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. Returning to Tuxedo Park after the war, he helped revitalize the community, assuming key roles including Mayor and Police Commissioner of the Village of Tuxedo Park and President of the Board of Trustees of the Tuxedo Park School. An avid golfer, he was active in building the new golf course at the Tuxedo Club in the 1950s; other club memberships included the Seminole Golf Club and U.S. Seniors Golf Association. He later made his home in Hobe Sound, Florida, where he served as President of the Jupiter Island Club. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Zosia Rogers; their daughter, Susan Moehlmann; his daughter, Lisa Taylor, and son, Henry P. Rogers, from an earlier marriage; his step-daughter, Sandra Penati; and six granddaughters. In lieu of flowers, consider donations to the Hobe Sound Community Chest (hobesoundcommunitychest.org) or Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org).

To the Rogers Family:
I had the privilege of working with Mr. Rogers in the capacity of personal trainer for the past 10
years. A true gentleman, in every sense of the word, his charming wit thoughtful insight, and benevolence will be greatly missed.
