EVELYN HARRISON Obituary

HARRISON--Evelyn Byrd. On November 3, 2012. Beloved daughter of William and Eva Harrison. Cherished by her sister Elizabeth Harrison Ormes of Fort Belvoir, Va. Eve died peacefully in her apartment in New York City accompanied by her long-term caregiver, Kathleen Doherty. Eve Harrison was born June 5, 1920 in Charlottesville, VA and graduated from John Marshall High School in Richmond. She received her A.B. from Barnard College in 1941 and her M.A. from Columbia University in 1943. Until the end of 1945, she served as a Research Analytic Specialist, translating intercepted Japanese messages for the War Department. In 1949, Eve Harrison joined the staff of the American School of Classical Studies excavations in the Athenian Agora. She received her Ph.D. from Columbia in 1952. Professor Harrison began her career in 1951 at the University of Cincinnati. She joined the faculty of the Department of Art History and Archaeology of Columbia University, where she was named full professor in 1967. Between 1970 and 1974, she was Professor of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University. In 1974, she was named Edith Kitzmiller Professor of the History of Fine Arts at the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University, where she taught until 2006. The Archaeological Institute of America recognized her lifetime of accomplishment by awarding her its Gold Medal for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement in 1992. The family would like to acknowledge Eve`s longtime physician Dr. Arnold Lisio for his many years of excellent care. Memorial services: Thursday, Nov 15th 7pm at Frank E. Campbell 1076 Madison Ave at 81 St. In lieu of flowers, people may send donations to: The American School of Classical Studies at Athens, 6-8 Charlton Street, Princeton, NJ 08540.
