JOHN KEHOE Obituary

KEHOE--John "Jack" P.

Fordham Mourns Trustee Fellow John "Jack" P. Kehoe, FCRH '60, FCLC '85, a beloved Trustee Fellow who "spared nothing of himself on behalf of Fordham" died on June 27. He was 78 years old. "We have lost a great heart today. Jack Kehoe was a gentleman through and through, devoted to Fordham, and deeply generous with his time and resources," said Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of the University. "He was a warm and loyal friend and mentor to me, and I will miss him more than words can say. I know the Fordham family joins me in keeping Peggy and all of Jack's family and loved ones in our thoughts and prayers." Born on August 5, 1938, Kehoe, a resident of New York City, first enrolled at Fordham in 1956. In 1958, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, where he served as sergeant up until 1964, receiving an American Spirit of Honor Medal. He received his certification in investment analysis from The New York Institute of Finance in 1960, and went on to earn his master's degree in business policy from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business in 1979. Named one of Irish America magazine's "Wall Street 50," Kehoe had a long career in corporate financial relations. As senior counselor of the global financial consultancy, The Abernathy MacGregor Group, Kehoe advised clients on matters related to transaction communications, investor relations, and crisis management. He held a number of capital markets positions on Wall Street for over a decade with two member firms of the New York Stock Exchange before being named president of a subsidiary mutual fund management/distribution company. He also became an allied member of the New York Stock Exchange. From 2005 to 2011, Kehoe served as a Trustee of Fordham University, where he held several leadership positions during his tenure. These included vice chair of the Nominating and Governance Committee, chair of the University Relations Committee, a member of the Board's Executive Committee, and secretary of the Board of Trustees. In 2009, he was a recipient of the Fordham Founder's Award. Kehoe also served as co-chair of Fordham's historic capital campaign Excelsior/ Ever Upward/ The Campaign for Fordham, which closed in 2014, having raised $540 million. He was elected a Trustee Fellow in 2016. Up until his death, Kehoe also served on the Fordham College at Lincoln Center Board of Advisers and on the Executive Committee of the President's Council. Those close to him described him as a "devoted father, husband and friend" who "loved Fordham and all of its people." "He had the strength and fortitude of his Marine Corps training, yet the empathy, compassion and faith of a son of Ignatius," said Fordham Trustee Fellow James E. Buckman, FCRH '66, PAR, friend and retired vice chairman of York Capital Management. "He spared nothing of himself on behalf of Fordham, from sharing his treasure and his time to his leadership and total commitment." In 2007, Kehoe became a member of the inaugural class inducted into the University's Archbishop Hughes Society, which recognizes those individuals and institutions whose lifetime support of the University totals $1 million or more. Among Kehoe's many contributions to the University was a generous gift to rebuild the Lowenstein Center's Black Box Studio Theatre on the Lincoln Center campus, which was renamed the Veronica Lally Kehoe Studio Theatre in memory of his late wife, Veronica, FCLC '02, who passed away in 2007. At Kehoe's request, a portion of that gift was allocated to establish a scholarship fund for Fordham students in need. Kehoe is survived by his five children, Maura Ann, John, Kevin, Brendan and Allise; three stepchildren Meg, Jay, and Brooke; and his wife, Peggy Brennan Hassett. A wake was held for Kehoe on Thursday, June 29, 2017 from 2pm to 5pm and 7pm to 9pm at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue, New York, New York. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, June 30 at 10am at the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, 980 Park Avenue, in New York, New York. Gifts to Fordham in Mr. Kehoe's name can be made by contacting the University at: Development and University Relations, Fordham University, 45 Columbus Avenue, New York, NY 10023 (212) 636-6550 [email protected]

The entire Fordham community will sorely miss Jack Kehoe. He was a frequent visitor to the Lincoln Center campus and always stopped by the Public Safety office to say hello and chat for awhile with whomever was on duty. He loved Fordham and he loved life. Rest in peace Mr. Kehoe and God bless your family.

To Jack's Family

This past May Jack sent the following condolence to all of us who were in Columbia University's Graduate School of Business' Executive MBA program with him (79-I) upon the untimely passing of another of our classmates, John Patberg. I have taken the liberty of editing it, because for us, it applied as much to Jack as it did to John:

Jack's passing is a huge loss to humanity. That may sound excessive. It's not. Jack could touch all of us and those outside our circle with his instinctive, unaffected brilliance. But it was when he got you one on one on a matter of one's personal concern or anxiety, that he got into you with a sincerity and kindness that was no less than healing. To say your DAD was a powerful force is an understatement regardless of the venue or subject at hand. And he could smooth over anything with his wry humor that was never pointed or hurting. We shall ALL truly miss the happy anticipation of seeing him at some gathering of ours. We all mourn your enormous loss. So much of the man, what he did and how he went about it... We all have memories of Jack to last several more lifetimes that began with our shared experience at CUGSBA 79-1.

We, the remaining members of 79-I continue to share your hurt. Just as Jack believed that spirits big and ranging and transforming don't die, so do we. We all look forward to being reunited with Jack and John and the other members of our class who have passed on when our time comes.

Deepest symapthy to the family. Jack and my mother Mary Denning grew up together in Highbridge where Jack's mother Molly and my grandfather Phil were first cousins from Ireland. Jack and his late sister Betty were part of our extended family growing up. A consummate kind gentleman, we had lunch in New York in May. My last email from him was a thoughtful and prayerful one for my father who predeceased him by less than a week. May God rest his soul.

To the Kehoe Family: My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.

Shocking news. I enjoyed and looked forward to Jack's witty and wry humor and the resulting playful banter. Spirits were always lifted in his presence. Jack was the original 'good guy'. Peggy, I am so saddened by this news... you are in my thoughts.

Peggy,
Jack was a soul brother. His heart had been opened to God's love for a long time and he was generous with the effects on him. I am thankful for having had at least some time to share this journey with him. The guys in the Saturday morning group at Lost Tree Chapel are going to miss him, but with gladness for what he knows now.

Thank you Kehoe family for sharing this great man. On the day before my next birthday, when I don't wake up to a singing message on my voice mail (always one day early, because he has confused my birth date by a day for decades), ending with his trademark, "God bless," I will be thinking of him with a sad smile, grateful for the years of advice, guidance, and friendship. The memories are so special.

Our deepest condolences to the entire family on the loss of such a wonderful gentleman. "Uncle" Jack will always have a special place in our hearts. We will always treasure the twinkle in his eye, a great big hug and memories of seeing Jack, Uncle Patsy and my dad (Phil) up to some mischief. May he rest in peace.
