I will miss the man who, years ago, used to call me almost every day with an idea for a project or the latest literary rumors, the critic I first read as an undergraduate and later had the good fortune to "work" with (it never seemed like work) editing books on Thomas Pynchon and others. Without Irving, I'd doubtless still be an assistant professor. I can still hear him giggling "Brooooooke" when I answered the phone, "I'm wondering what you know about. . . ."
