JEFF COONEY Obituary

COONEY--Jeff.

Creative director/co-owner of EUE/Screen Gems died Monday in Westchester, NY. Cooney was executive producer of the Emmy-nominated National Geographic "Genius" series on Albert Einstein as well as the upcoming feature in the series, "Picasso." Cooney, 60, had been struggling with intense pain associated with small fiber neuropathy. A director and producer, Jeff Cooney started his life in front of the camera as a child actor for Cream of Wheat and appeared in more than 50 national television commercials. His father, George Cooney, was a Columbia Pictures executive prior to purchasing EUE/Screen Gems in 1982. Jeff Cooney, the oldest of four children, served as executive producer and creative director at a division called EUE/Sokolow which focused on content development. A stellar athlete, Cooney played football at Bronxville High School and at College of the Holy Cross. He lettered in football at Holy Cross and majored in English Literature. After graduation, he started his own production company with a desire to work as a director. Jeff later joined EUE/Screen Gems as a principal and director. Over the next 30 years Cooney would travel the globe directing commercials for clients such as UPS, Coca-Cola, Nestle, KFC and Visa. He pursued his passion for football in his free time, serving on the board of the National Football Foundation. In 2010, Cooney and television producer Sam Sokolow founded EUE/Sokolow to develop, produce and sell programming. "We have created an environment where we have complete freedom to pick and choose the material we want to develop and sell to networks," Cooney said at the time. EUE/Sokolow has worked on numerous projects for networks that include HBO, ABC and NBC as well as National Geographic. The company has attracted top talent, developing projects with Kurt Russell, Josh Lucas and Lisa Ling, directors such as Linda Mendoza and showrunners such as Caryn Lucas, John Lehr, Nancy Hower and Blair Singer. EUE/Screen Gems COO Chris Cooney, who worked with his brother as an executive producer for "Genius" and as co-owner of EUE/ Screen Gems, says his brother will be remembered for his selflessness. "He put others first in a business that could be intensely competitive," Chris Cooney said. Jeff Cooney was also dedicated to mentoring high school students in underserved areas and was deeply involved with a program called PLAY IT SMART. Sharon Cooney Shuttleworth, Jeff's sister and fellow co-owner of EUE/ Screen Gems remembers the gift Jeff was to his family and others. "Everyone who met him fell in love with him. He cared so much about people and was so giving of his time and his heart. He will be missed and lovingly remembered every day," she says. John Cooney, Jeff's brother, says, "Jeff will be remembered as a mentor to many, including myself, being five years younger. He gave many a kid their first jobs in film and television. Jeff was always a role model for excellence on the set. Whether as a childhood actor or later as a director, Jeff was a pro with a huge heart." Cooney is survived by his wife, Anja M. Cooney of Bronxville, New York and his children Nicholas and George Cooney. He is also survived by his parents, Cynthia Rose and George Cooney of Bronxville, New York; his brother Chris Cooney of Chappaqua, New York and his wife Charlotte Lovschal Cooney and children Alison and Erik Cooney; his sister Sharon Cooney Shuttleworth of Manalapan, Florida, and her children Will and Margaret Shuttleworth and her husband Guy Pepper; his brother John Cooney of Boulder, Colorado and wife Wendy Ewen Cooney and children Lindsey and Kelly Cooney. Private services for Cooney will be held for the immediate family. A memorial service and celebration of Cooney will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Westchester County Chapter, New York.

Jeff was so warm and friendly when l saw him last. Very down to earth for a producer of high quality features like a Genius on TV. He came to the class of 1977 reunion with Sharon and I am so glad he did. Wishing we could turn back the clock, so he could come back.... such heart-breaking news. Love and hugs to all the Cooney family.

It was with great sadness that I learned of Jeff's passing. I worked on quite a few commercials with Jeff, and every production was a pleasure. The director is the captain of the ship in a commercial production, and I was always in good hands with Jeff. We traveled to LA, he traveled to Chicago, we produced in NY because everyone in our creative department so enjoyed working with Jeff. He was such a gentleman. His work with Veterans led us to many great conversations. My condolences to his family. I only knew your man, Jeff, in a working capacity, but it didn't feel like that. I lost a friend. Godspeed to the Cooney family.

Jeff was a special person in so many ways. He was kind, decent and respectful of others. It was one of the great privileges of a lifetime for me to see him in action as a producer. It is not an easy job considering the people that you have to work with both on the production side and the actors/actresses themselves. Many different and unique temperaments. I saw Jeff work with the likes of Steve Buscemi, Madonna and a host of other very interesting people in both shows and commercial productions. Jeff was a class act. I would say that patience is the one vital quality that a good producer/creative director must have apart from being creative and Jeff was plenty creative. Jeff got along with everybody. He loved people and he loved helping people. He was a rare jewel in the crown of humanity and his light and love will always burn strong in my heart. People like Jeff make the world a better place. He made my world a better place. I will miss him with all my heart and soul.

To George and Cynthia and the ENTIRE wonderful Cooney family...Cindi and I are heartbroken for your loss. John's been very good about keeping us in the loop though we feel so far away and would love to hug you all. A cherished memory I'll keep with me always happened in the later '80s when I was pressed into service as Jeff's boom-mic 'operator' on the Brooklyn Heights promenade set for The St. Petersburg Times shoot with Gene Shalit as celebrity spokesman. I was impressed immediately with how Jeff could command so many working parts and be so accessible and supportive, even to me when-on the first take-I tripped on the dolly track and not-so-gently engaged said boom-mic with Mr. Shalit's nose. Through our deep friendships with John and Wendy, we feel like extended family-as I always have, ever so proud back in '93 to have served with Jeff and Chris as John's 'best men' at the wedding. Rest peacefully Jeff Cooney. With love, Matt and Cindi Krane

George, Cynthia, Anja, Nick, George, Sharon, Chris and John:

May God bless you as you deal with this devastating loss. He was like a 5th brother to me and I am so glad that we made the effort to stay in touch over the 40 plus years since Jeff and I became teammates in the fall of 1976. His love and generosity was an extension of your family. You opened your home to me and provided me with opportunities that have enhanced my life. Our friendship is a relationship that I will forever cherish along with the memories and laughter that we shared.

To the Cooney Family: I am so sorry for your loss. I was a second-string lineman on the Bronxville Broncos football team, and I remember Jeff as a wondrous athlete who ran a sub-4.6 forty and who, as QB, ran the triple-option offense out of the wishbone that way it was meant to be run. Jeff was a consummate gentleman and sportsman, and everyone not only liked him but also revered him. You all were my neighbors during high school (in that you lived on Summit Avenue and I lived on Avon Road). My father, who still lives in Bronxville, gave me the news last night. I still cannot believe this.

Love,
John Sharp

Jeff was our true family friend, we are all so very sorry!

I will always remember him from our days in Ocean Beach Fire Island and will always remember the trip that he took with our family to Heavenly Valley, CA on a corporate video shoot, which he produced an amazing video. He was incredibly talented in everything he created, touched and accomplished in his life.

Jeff was a just a genuine person, always engaging and interested in reconnecting with all of his friends. He was a stand out, unassuming and considered a sincere and gentle man's man to all of his family & friends.

We will always miss Jeff greatly in this short life but we pray that he is in the warm embrace of Jesus Christ and is not in any pain anymore. On behalf of all our extended family members, Rest in Peace Jeff!
