Val, my goodness, if you could see the state of the world right now- it's not pretty. I'm sure we would be talking about it over drinks or dinner. Can't believe it has been a decade...I sure miss you. xoxox

Even in first grade in Roslyn Heights, NY Valerie was special. Last week, gathering material for what might be a memoir, I found in my earliest notebooks I found, "In 1st grade I had a crush on Valerie Gladstone." She turned out to be much better looking than me and a better writer.

Dearest Val, the world has been set on fire since you left us. Discord practically every day. You wouldn't like it very much if you were still here, though I don't doubt you'd have plenty to say and write about it. Miss you, my friend.

Val, if only you could see the state of the world right now. I'm sure you would have so much to say about it, and it would surely inspire your writing. Why do the good people have to depart while the evil ones thrive? I will never understand. Thank you for having been part of my life; in spite of our age difference, we got on as friends and equals. I sure miss you.

Thought about you today. Drove by the Fountainbleu Hotel. Remembered the words of encouragement. Trying to remember the aerobic instructors name that you were good friends with. Wonder if she even knows. Remembered Leornard the spa attendant. Joey the weight room instructor. All good memories.

Valerie found joy in every moment.

What I will always remember is that in our conversations Valerie uncovered enormous humor. We laughed perhaps more than we talked because she pulled humor from each new spoken thought. Her laughter, her smiling face and the joy she expressed in every living moment will live forever in my memory.

Hi Sara and Nick, I knew your Mom for years some 30 plus when she wrote mostly travel. The special connection for me with your Mom was the role she took in my daughter Spencer's life. She was a teacher, mentor and a friend to my daughter since she was about 12 years old. She took her to the opera and many performances. They would meet and have lunch and long conversations. We only found out yesterday of Mom's passing and we are so very sad. Our hearts and prayers go out to both of you and those previous grand chldren she always spoke so lovingly about. I send you both good energy.

I met Val after she read a poem I wrote about 9/11 when I was 13. Since then we have been very close, meeting to go to shows, have lunch ,a drink or whatever. She told me she held off on telling me she had lung cancer so that I wouldn't be upset. I last saw her in August and we corresponded via email a few times after that.

I'm so heartbroken right now because I only just learned today she that passed. My heart goes out to her family.

Dear Sara and Nick,
So sorry about the passing of your mother. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.
One of my clearest memories of your mom was with her in the swimming pool at the American Club, one friend crying in the bathroom, Sara trying to console her and your mom explaining to me how complicated girls' friendships are compared to boys. Boys just punch each other in the face if necessary and move on good as new. Something I took to heart.

I'm so sorry to hear of Valerie's passing. She was my go-to arts writer when I was an editor at The Root, reliable, smart, good writer. And we finally met face to face over lunch last year. We talked for hours. She was lovely.

November 10, 2014

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Valerie's generosity and enthusiasm for her passions—dance and jazz, especially—made all our lives so much richer. She will be missed by so many.

I feel honored and fortunate to have met Val one time about 2 years ago as the father of her nephew Michael's wife, Justine. Amazing presence, just oozing with humanity; warm, approachable.
