ALAN BERENBAUM Obituary

BERENBAUM--Alan, 64, a computer scientist, educator and renaissance man, died of an aggressive variety of T-cell lymphoma on January 27 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. He is survived by his devoted partner of 43 years, Eileen M. Lach, and his loving sisters May Berenbaum and Diane Berenbaum. Mr. Berenbaum, who earned his advanced degree in computer science from Princeton, spent more than 25 years as a scientist at Bell Labs, and most recently was the senior architect designing chips for Microchip Technologies. Holder of several patents, he also taught at The Cooper Union. To his extended circle of friends, Alan is remembered as an intoxicating, incisive conversationalist, at ease with subjects from quantum physics to Formula One racing to the absurdities of today's politics. He wore his brilliance with grace and humor. A celebration of his life and spirit will be held at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel at 1076 Madison Avenue at 1:30pm on Friday, January 29.

Not sure what to say?

Alan was a wonderful, delightful, thoughtful person and a joy to know and be with on any occasion. He was the best of companions for Eileen. We enjoyed many meals, some cooked by Alan, concerts, and other good times together. He is and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out Eileen in this time of remembering.

I shared many a good meal and many a glass of fine wine with Alan. He was a man of great wit, humour, intellect, knowledge and kindness. He was a master of science and a master of literature, music, theatre and film - in short, a wonderful, civilised person, whom I shall miss very much. My heart truly aches for Eileen's loss. As we say in the Jewish tradition: May Alan's memory always be for a blessing.

After fifty-four years of intellectual stimulation and zaniness, I was not ready to call in quits. Too soon, it can never be right without him.

Alan was a friend and confidante in our senior year of high school. He was smart, adventurous, and had a great sense of humor. In a letter he sent while we were in college, he described himself as being the only one disembarking from the plane who was wearing a pink suit. My thoughts and prayers are with you, his family.

Professor Berenbaum was one of my first professors at Cooper. I had him spring semester freshman year, and he was the kindest, most caring professor I've met. I struggled a lot during the semester, but Professor Berenbaum always offered words of encouragement and never judged me harshly based on my performance.
A classmate told me that Professor Berenbaum once spoke about me when I wasn't present, that it was students like me that made him enjoy teaching. But really, it was professors like Alan Berenbaum that have helped me grow to love learning. Thank you Professor Berenbaum, for without your encouragement I would never had made it this far.

Please remember Professor Berenbaum as not only a brilliant man, but also an amazing educator and kind-hearted professor.

My thoughts are with Eileen and his family.

I had only recently met Alan through training events in Arizona and New York, but in that short time found myself in awe of both his intellect and his sense of joy and passion for life. His family and loved ones are in my prayers.
