CAROL GELLES Obituary

GELLES--Carol Schrier, passed away at the age of 84 on Sunday, September 22 at Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle. Devoted wife of Walter, with whom she shared a rewarding 62 year marriage, loving mother of Robert (Diane) and Richard (Susan), nurturing grandmother of Andrew, Danny, Kevin and Thomas, loyal sister of the late Suzanne Heimerdinger, faithful sister-in-law of Edith Gelles (Michael Weiss), David (Pam) Gelles, Carol Gold Gelles (Henry Gelles, deceased), and John (Marilyn) Heimerdinger, and caring aunt of 12 nieces and nephews. During her lifetime, Carol touched many other lives with her warmth, generosity and love. In her role as homemaker, she was a wonderful wife and mom, and her passing is a tremendous loss to her husband and children. She was an excellent friend who valued the people in her life. She was an optimistic and creative person who always enjoyed learning and trying new things. She loved playing the music of Rodgers & Hart, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Frederic Chopin and Claude Debussy on her piano, reading the autobiographies of such people as Alec Guinness, Sonia Sotomayor and Marcia Davenport, and writing letters (and in more recent years, emails) to family and friends. We will all miss Carol very much. A funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, October 6 at 3pm at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 21 West Broad Street, Mount Vernon. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Carol's memory can be made online to Temple Israel of New Rochelle, Temple Israel Cares Fund, by going to their website at http://tinr.org and following instructions.
