Carol Britto Obituary

1935 - 2012
Carol Whitney Britto, virtuoso jazz pianist, died March 16, 2012 in New York City. Born in Cleveland, OH in 1935, she is survived by her children Jeff Britto, Karen Carter, and Eric Britto, her sister Jeanne Casey (Larry), her brother Mike Whitney (Rosemary), grandchildren, and loving nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, well-known bass player Bill Britto, and by her sisters Marilyn Whitney and Ilene McCarthy (Larry).

Music was Carol's life. She couldn't remember ever not playing the piano. School concerts led to a scholarship to the Cleveland Institute of Music. Clevelanders may remember her playing at the Purple Tree Lounge in the Manger Hotel. From there she began to make a name for herself in New York and in Toronto, where she studied with the incomparable Oscar Peterson. "Oscar taught me how to be a take-charge pianist," she said. Her forceful energetic technique was often compared to his. With her Trio she was the long-time favorite at the Lyte's jazz room in Toronto's Royal York Hotel. She was organist for the Toronto Blue Jays. She played at colleges and jazz festivals throughout North America. She was chosen to be an exclusive Baldwin Piano artist.

Carol was famous in her own right, both solo and as leader of her Carol Britto Trio, but perhaps best known as an accompanist par excellence. During her career she accompanied most of the legendary names in jazz, including Chet Baker, Benny Carter, Helen Humes, Joe Williams, Major Holley, Zoot Sims, Phoebe Snow, Joe Venuti, Doc Cheatham, Marvin Stamm, Roy Eldridge, Flip Phillips, Bobby Rosengarden, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Gary Mazzaroppi, Milt Jackson, Lance Hayward, Tootsie Bean, and Michael Moore. She played with Percy Faith and his Orchestra. She toured with the Tommy Dorsey Band.

Trumpet player Marvin Stamm said of her, "If a visiting jazzman wants a powerful yet sensitive musical companion at the piano, nobody in the business can equal her." Tenor saxophonist Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis called her "Lady Britto, the Countess Basie of the piano." The great jazz violinist Joe Venuti called her simply, "Mother Jazz."

In New York Carol played all the major clubs - Knickerbocker, Fortune Garden Pavilion, Village Corner, Birdland, Café Gianluca, J's, Zinno, Carnegie Tavern, Hanratty's, the Rainbow Room. Long time New York Times jazz critic John S. Wilson wrote of her, "Carol Britto has a strong, forthright approach . . . that gives her showier pieces a sense of positive mobility and turns her faster selections into potential juggernauts."

Britto's albums won her a wider audience and acclaim - "Alone Together" with Flip Phillips and Michael Moore, and "Inner Voices" with Michael Moore, both on the Town Crier label.

Carol had many interests. She was a gourmet chef who loved cooking for friends. She was an avid reader. She was expert at working crossword puzzles. But it was to her music that she gave her heart and soul.

What an incomparable stylist ! Found Carol while searching online, shortly after she had passed. Had never known of her when she was active, her recorded efforts too few and far between. Thank goodness for those few that were preserved. Her absolutely stunning performance of "Summertime" hidden in a Porgy and Bess medley. Georgeous interplay between Carol and her bassist !! Regret that this most unique performer was not more broadly acknowledged.

I attended Holy Name High School with Carol in the 1950's and graduated with her. She was our "in residence" piano player for all school functions. I never realized she reached this level of fame. May she rest in peace.

I first met Carol in 1969 on Cape Cod.
When I heard her play, I was blown away.
I subsequently took piano lessons with her. She was one of the most important influences on my playing in my life.
We became close friends for the next 43 years. We played together in Miami and I visited her in New York often. I not only lost a mentor, but a great friend. I will forever miss her.

I've many fond memories of fun gigs with Carol & Bill in Toronto going back to the 60's.
A 2 wk. gig with Bobby Hackett at Bourbon Street was special. A last minute New Year's Eve with Murray Ginsberg was hilarious.
She was a warm, generous lady but when she sat down at the piano the music came first.
She will be missed by all who played with her or had a chance to listen to her wonderful talent.
Sincere condolences to her family.

I knew Carol for 27 years. I was the engineer who recorded her on her "Inner Voices" album. I sang with her as she accompanied the Lance Hayward Jazz Chorus. And I saw her perform countless times all over New York. The most cherished memory I will have is when Carol played for me as I sang at my own wedding reception. She was a great friend and an eternal inspiration, and I will never forget her. It's a great loss for all, but the world is richer for her talent.

What a wonderful tribute to an amazing woman. As another one of Carol's MANY nieces, I think I'll miss her sense of humor the most. She always made us laugh and lovingly called us kids "snagglepuss" when we were crabby. She was brave too! Who else would temporarily store their beloved grand piano at her sister, Jeanne's house, KNOWING that there were 12 little snagglepusses running around all excited to get in their first experiences with ebony and ivory?!?!
I too, can still hear Carol playing "Easter Parade" for our family.
My heartfelt love and prayers continue for Jeff, Karen, Eric, and all those who are feeling the pain of losing someone so very special.

I was very fortunate to make my debut as a jazz singer with Carol's trio at Lytes Jazz Club in Toronto. We then spent two glorious weeks playing together. It was one swinging affair. She will be missed by all who had the privledge of hearing her music.

This is the second time that we have lost Carol, the first time was when she moved to NYC. It is a sad time for the jazz community. She was one of the best piano player and the warmest person. My condolences to Karen, Mike, Rick and the rest of the family . Guido Basso, Consecon, Ont.

Condolences to Carol's family &, I might say, to those of us in the jazz world who loved "Carol's sound". Ray & I went to Lytes more evenings than I can count to hear music that "really swung".

My Aunt Carol was an amazing woman, but to me she was my aunt. We played Scrabble together. She'd play the piano for us to sing and dance throughout the house.
Although we will miss her terribly, God has gained an awesome lady.
Rest in Peace Carol. Blessing to the family that each day is easier handling our loss.

Every springtime I think of Carol and still hear her playing "Easter Parade" at The Village Corner, in NYC's Greenwich Village, back in the late 80s and early 90s.

Dear Jeff, Karen, and Eric, Mike and Mom,
Carol is now at peace. She will be missed, not only by her family, but by the jazz community that loved her.
Blessings to you all during this difficult time. May God's loving grace fill your heart with joy.
Love,
Mary Beth
