Lawrence Jerome Krakower, 89, passed away June 12, 2013 at his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Larry was born August 18, 1923 to Abraham and Rose Krakower in New York City and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He married Evelyn Wolins in 1946 and after living on Long Island, they moved to Valley Cottage, NY , where they raised their three children, Linda, Michele and Glenn, along with a succession of Great Danes.
Larry worked for the NY Post for 25 years, but thoroughbred horse racing and breeding was his passion. He owned and bred dozens of horses over a long career in racing.
In 1968 he and his brother, Stan introduced Weight Watchers to Western Pennsylvania, where they were very successful. Larry built a home in Amity, PA, where he fulfilled a lifelong dream, to fly his own plane to watch his horses race and on good days, stand in the Winner's Circle. He completed his pilot's training at the age of 70.
Larry is survived by his wife, Judith Thompson Krakower; his first wife and lifelong friend, Evelyn Krakower of Valley Cottage, NY; his daughters, Linda Greene (Christian Basler) of Upper Nyack, NY and Michele Heiner (Lance) of Walkersville, MD; his son, Glenn of Milwaukee, WI; and his grandchildren Aaron Heiner, Amanda Heiner Cody (Pete), and Charles Basler. Larry's love for his family and friends will forever be remembered and cherished.
