1923 - 2013
Ross Lee Foertmeyer passed away on Aug. 23rd., 2013 at the Sitter & Barfoot Veteran's Care Center in Richmond Virginia, where he had been a resident since 2008.
Mr. Foertmeyer was born in Dayton Kentucky April 5th, 1923, and resided in nearby Bellevue Kentucky. He graduated from the University School of Cincinnati, and then later attended Yale University (class of 1944). He enlisted in the Army in late 1942, and served as a ground station radio operator Europe while serving in the US Army Air Force from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He graduated from Yale University in 1947. He was also a holder of an M.A. from Middlebury College in Vermont, and a J.D. from University of Michigan Law School. His career spanned work as a lawyer for the old Burgess firm in New York City, and subsequently the Lummis Company, Johnson & Johnson, and lastly Bristol-Myers Company from 1969 until his retirement in 1983.
In 1951 he married Lavonne Rose Burwell, of Malvern Ohio, with whom he raised six children.
Before moving to Richmond, he lived in greater New York City; Solebury, Pennsylvania; Rome, Italy; Brussels, Belgium; Carmel Valley, California, and Brookings, Oregon.
His wife Lavonne, his son Samuel Ross Foertmeyer, and his daughter Mary Elizabeth Foertmeyer predeceased him. His daughters Victoria Mills, Alexandra Foertmeyer, Pamela Maitland, and Stephanie Foertmeyer, and nine grandchildren survive him.
