HOFFMAN--Sanford "Sandy"
80, died April 14, 2017 at home in Saugerties, NY. Born in the Bronx, Sandy lived in New York City for most of his life (with stints in Amsterdam, London and Morocco), before relocating permanently to the Hudson Valley. Sandy, a graduate of the Cooper Union School in NYC, was a commercial illustrator and instructor (School of Visual Arts among others); he also worked with special needs adults in later years. Sandy was a true renaissance man, a lover of music, film, travel, art and food (Sandy single-handedly taught his daughter Merryl to eat calamari at a young age, followed by an espresso chaser). He loved Danny Kaye movies, the New York Yankees, pastrami on rye with deli mustard and lemon meringue pie. A kind and gentle soul, a comedian at heart, he will be missed by scores of people, a true testament to his loving and eccentric nature. Sandy is survived by his daughter, Merryl Hoffman and her husband Robert Wolff of NYC, and their sons Salem and Ethan, who Sandy adored. A memorial service will be held during the summer of 2017, further details to come. Donations may be made in his name to the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center Albany, New York.

It has been almost 3 years since you left us and I think of you often, actuallyalmost each day. You were a mentor to me when I began my job at Linnabary and became a very close friend to not only myself but my entire family as well. I remember you coming by several mornings on Christmas day to see my parents and you would be there before I arrived at times lol. After telling them what an amazing and fabulous person you were they struck up a few conversations with you in between and you were always at family gatherings from that point on. You threw me a going away party when I left for the Air Force and you welcomed me back when I returned and danced with me at my wedding with the guy I met in the service and remained at my side through everything. My two sons knew you from day one and adored you, especially Patrick. You would come by to visit when I was on maternity leave and then remained active in his life to come by and color and draw with him as he got older. We have drawings and paintings all over our house that you created and talk about you and your funny stories all the time. You were truly one of a kind and I have a very special place in my heart for you always. I miss you and have been thinkingof you so much these last few weeks. I know you are in a better place and will you see you again on the other side

Sandy was a fellow artist living on the Bowery. I first met him at Moisha's, corner of Grand St. and Bowery, and over coffee he would dazzle me with his humor and kindness. Sandy took me under his wing and explained the basics of baseball, he was a Yankee fan and nothing else. His loft was a clutter of life and he always had, as I remeber, a dog or a cat. He was a true New Yorker, generous to everyone he met. He once advised me to stop with the mayo and eat my corned beef with mustard. I loved the man and will miss his voice and company.

(my mom was Sandy's cousin). I hadn't seen him in a long time - a very long time. The memories I have of him are mostly from when I was a kid, which is a hard filter to work thru. There was something special about him, larger than life is the way I remember it (rightly or wrongly). From the obit picture I can still see him, but younger still with a fuller face. When most things were black and white and shades of gray, Sandy seemed pistachio (yes, more a flavor than a real color). I wish him peace and comfort. Please let me know of the memorial service.

I have the fondest of memories of Sandy, who photographed me when i was a 17 year old kid at NY's famous Improvisation. Hadn't seen him in decades. So funny that he came to mind several times in the past couple of weeks. Such a kind person, he was a good friend to J.J. Barry and many other talented comics at the Improv. RIP. My sincere condolences to his beloved family.
