Allen Barkey died on September 24, 2011 on Longboat Key, Florida, where he resided with his beloved wife Henrietta.

Born in Istanbul, Turkey, Allen emigrated to the United States at the age of 17, settling in New York City with his parents Isaac and Caroline and sister Viviane. An alumnus of the Lycée Saint Michel, a graduate of Manhattan College and a U.S. Army veteran, Allen spent most of his career in international trade. Together with Henrietta, he ran Barkey Importing Company, which, notably, introduced Turkish apricots to the U.S. market.

Allen was the proud and loving father of two boys, whom he raised with Henrietta, the light of his life, in New Rochelle, NY. And he delighted in the hugs of his two young granddaughters, who called him "Papa".

Fluent in five languages, Allen was a traveler, a raconteur and a loyal friend to many. He was also an opera buff, an avid reader of history and a life-long student. Swimming in the ocean was his favorite outdoor pastime, and he continued to ride his three-wheel recumbent until his last days.

Survived by his wife of 48 years, Henrietta, his sister Viviane, his sons Jonathan and David, his daughter-in-law Lauren, and his granddaughters Cara and Chloe, he will be forever missed.

A Memorial Service will be held at John J. Fox Funeral Home in Larchmont, NY, Tuesday September, 27 at 12 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Epilepsy Foundation.
