Arthur Lessac Obituary

1909 - 2011
Arthur Lessac, one of the most highly-regarded and original teachers in the world of voice, speech, singing, and movement, died at age 101, on April 7, 2011. He continued to live a full life up until a week before he passed. At the end of March, the remarkable Mr. Lessac was creating a new drama department, teaching at the University of Rijeka in Croatia. In his early years, Lessac started his singing explorations as a tenor in Churches, Synagogues, and Mosques as part of a Christmas quartet composed of Josh White, Paul Robeson and Burl Ives. His eclecticism started there.

In 1962, Mr. Lessac was invited by Elia Kazan and Robert Whitehead to train the original Lincoln Center Repertory Theatre Company with Robert Lewis and Anna Sokolow. Over the next thirty years his work moved into the area of health and longevity, incorporating what he called a Kinesensic holistic approach to physical and emotional health. Known for not falling into traditional categories, Lessac lived believing that we are all singers and dancers and devoted himself to protecting the innate skills and energies that keep our perceptions from becoming habits and our bodies from becoming old.

His books, The Use and Training of the Human Voice and The Use and Training of the Human Body, have become required reading for countless students and remain a lasting contribution to the fields of acting and performing and clinical speech therapy. He had just finished writing his third book.

In 1998, the Lessac Institute was founded and continues certifying trainers throughout North America, Europe and Africa. His work has touched three generations of performers. He has served as a keynote speaker around the world and is a recipient of numerous
honors from universities and theatre associations. Lessac was an acting member in the Voice and Speech Trainers Association, Association for Theatre in Higher Education, Speech Communication Association, American Speech and Hearing Association, American
Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dances and Association of Theatre Movement Educators.

Lessac attended the Eastman School of Music and received his BS and MA degrees from New York University, worked with patients at Bellevue hospital, and taught at the Stella Adler studio and Jewish theological seminary in NY. A professor at S.U.N.Y. from 1970-1981 (now Emeritus), he also served as a visiting professor at the University of Puerto Rico, California State University, and the University of Virginia.

As a performer, Lessac began as a boy soprano in 1919, a cantorial singer in the late 20s and was part of the 1937 Broadway production "Pins and Needles". He capped this side stage career with episodes of Cheers, Sara, and a short role in Mickey and Maud in his mid-late years.

Two weeks ago he was still thinking young -- teaching and dancing in the streets of Rijeka, Croatia, with students of his new academy of voice and speech.

He is survived by his son, daughter, two grandchildren, cousins, and thousands of friends, students and extended family around the world.

A man of infinite enthusiasm, Arthur was a constant delight. His company and his professional work are indelible in my memories.

Arthur was a "total presence" utilizing every erg of his bodily energies. I first met him at a theatre training session at the Joe Papp Public Theatre. The experience for me as a non-actor was electric and still remembered frequently. My condolences to Arthur's family and all who loved him. Arthur's gifts to humanity are inspiration to us all. May he rest in peace.

I only heard of Arthur Lessac recently on reading his obituary in the NY. I am now studying ‘Body Wisdom’ . It is the finest work on psychosomatics I have seen, and predict that Arthur’s legacy will be remembered as the author of a classic.

I first heard about Arthur's method while training to be a theatre arts teacher, in 1974. A small brochure would arrive announcing the workshops. It wasn't until 1988 that I nade it out to Boulder Colorado to study with
Arthur and his core teachers. It was
a six week intensive and one of the most wonderful experiences of my life.
When I returned home and to my government
job a coworker remarked," What has happened to you?" "How so?" I said.
He continued, "You've changed in appearance, with the way you sound, and the way you move." Transformation did happen during my Voice amd Body training. There have been seven most
important people in my lfe. Arthur
was one of them. I'm still, though, trying to be the care free Gypsy he
wanted me to be.

What a privilege it was for us to know Arthur and to learn from him during the 60's when we took lessons from him at his NYC apartment. At that time, Birdie was his right hand who met and greeted us each session with her cheerful, smiling face. Arthur influenced us tremendously and, with his blessing, we began teaching his method at School for the Actors Company in NYC. In 1983 as Marcia entered into a new career of professional storytelling, she met him again in Duluth, MN, amazed at how his method had grown and what he, himself, could do. He was a dedicated researcher of the human voice and body and made so much available to those who came to him.

Helllooooo, Arthur. I hope you and Birdie have reunited somewhere along that ol' river that is flowing out there. With gratitude and thanks for all you taught us.

My encounter with Arthur started in 1971 at the Pre-Convention Intensive Workshop for Stage Movement Teachers at San Francisco State University. We were arbitrarily paired up because of our height. His influence not only on voice but on contemporary physical theatre is indelible. On several occasions he was our house guest where we regaled in the elemental aspects of performance. As a mentor, a coach and advisor, he is among a handful of trusted and cherished personalities in my life. His entrance into glory is but the next step into the presence of the Almighty and into the company of his sweet Birdie.
