CHARLES RYSKAMP Obituary

RYSKAMP--Charles A. The Board of Trustees of The Frick Collection and Anne L. Poulet, Director, wish to express their profound sorrow at the death of Dr. Charles Ryskamp, Director Emeritus. Mr. Ryskamp served with extraordinary distinction as Director of the Frick from June 1987 until September 1997, and continued to serve as an advisor until very recently. During his tenure at the Frick, the institution underwent profound evolution. He expanded the special exhibition program, developed new gallery spaces, enhanced the publications program, strengthened the Collection with new art works, and built broader-based support among existing constituencies, while making countless new friends for the Frick. His tireless efforts to stabilize the finances of the Frick Art Reference Library ensured its enduring presence in the world of art history research. His deep knowledge of literature and art informed every aspect of his leadership of the institution, where his commitment to scholarship and connoisseurship remain the touchstones of our mission. Previously seen as a staid and static museum, Mr. Ryskamp found ways to energize the institution without losing sight of its high standards and unique place in the art world. His tireless, ever-engaging, larger-than-life persona drew a widening audience into the Frick circle, and set the course for expanding our outreach to a broader visitorship. He will be remembered for his passionate love of art, for his dedication to ensuring the strength and stability of the institution, as a gifted connoisseur, and for his wisdom, warmth and marvelous wit. He will be deeply missed. Margot C. Bogert, Chair Anne L. Poulet, Director

Professor Ryskamp was my English Department thesis advisor during my senior year at Princeton. I wrote about the artist and scientist protagonists in Nathaniel Hawthorne's short stories. Prof. Ryskamp was fully engaged in this project and he provided many helpful comments throughout the process. The thesis was well-received by the Princeton English Department, but it could easily have been otherwise without the guidance and advice generously offered by Professor Ryskamp.

I will always remember this man. He was "Uncle Chuck" to me when actually he was my cousin. My dad, Jim Ryskamp shared many memories of him as kids. He wrote to me not long ago to answer a question about genealogy. I always dreamed of viewing his collection in the near future and shaking his hand. What an exemplary image of kindness, wisdom, laughter ...what an impact on young art students ....
Sincerely, Laura Ryskamp House
