DAVID BACKUS Obituary

BACKUS--David. 1953-2016.

It is with profound sadness that the Economics Faculty at New York University and the Stern School of Business mark the passing of our beloved colleague David Backus. Dave, the Heinz Riehl Professor of Economics at New York University's Stern School of Business died on June 12, 2016. The cause of death was leukemia. Dave was a renowned economist. He pioneered a new approach to international macroeconomics, infusing it with tools from finance. His approach shapes our understanding of credibility and monetary policy, exchange rate behavior and international finance. His work on asset markets, with a wide variety of authors, helped lay the foundation for the thriving new research area at the intersection of macroeconomics and finance. In addition to being an intellectual leader at the Stern School, Dave served for seven years as the Vice Dean for Faculty and as Chair of the Economics Department and the Accounting Department. Dave was much loved by his colleagues and by generations of Stern students for his strength of character, his generosity and kindness, and his sharp wit. Dave was a gifted teacher. Driven by his own deep intellectual curiosity, he developed and spearheaded many visionary courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. Dave was the consummate modern academic. He loved research, teaching, and students. He was also a skilled leader who valued and strengthened the culture of academic institutions. Dave was never happier than when he could bring people together socially to share a beer and talk about research and ideas. Dave, you will be deeply missed, you left us too soon. Friday afternoons will never be the same. Prior to joining Stern in 1990, Dave studied at Hamilton College (BA, 1975) and Yale University (PhD, 1981), taught at Queen's University and the University of British Columbia, served at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, and was a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He grew up in Pittsburgh and remained an avid supporter of the Pirates, Steelers, and Penguins. Dave is survived by his wife Marilyn Jason, his children Paul and Melanie Backus, his mother Marjorie Backus, and his sisters and brother Lois Backus, Laura Hoffman, Ruth Grillo, and Rudolf Ramsauer.

Dave was one of the kindest and most wonderful people I have ever known. He took me under his wing when I first arrived at NYU, welcomed me, and made me feel at home. He is deeply missed

I just found this page after doing a search for Dave; I hadn't known. I was a visitor at Stern in 2009. Dave showed me several kindnesses, both personal and professional, during my stay there. He was clearly the leader of the lunch group and set the friendly tone. And he was intellectually open minded---a model for what we should all be in academia. I was truly sorry to learn of his passing.

David Backus was an amazing professor who made economics interesting and did not politicize it. I enjoyed taking Macroeconomics with him at NYU Stern and appreciate all of his efforts to improve the offerings at the school. He helped bring about a course that traveled to Cuba, which I attended. He also developed a course related to the learning of the programming language - Python. We will all miss him!

Rest in peace, Professor Backus. I am so happy I had a chance to meet you during the 2016 Spring Semester at Stern. Thank you for your patience, for being genuine and approachable, and for working so hard to ensure all your students learned the content and felt included.

My condolences to David Backus' family & friends.

I knew him as Prof. Backus for only a short time this Spring at NYU, but he had a tangible effect on my career choice after graduation. It was obvious in the classroom that he cared deeply about his students, and the joy he had for his own curiosity was an inspiration for us all. I know he will be missed by many.

My thoughts & condolences are with his family.

Dave was just a great guy, besides being a great economists. He would help you with your work when nothing was at stake for him and nobody would be looking. Economics is a better science because of him, and the world a sadder place without him.

Dave was one of my roommates freshman year at Hamilton. So many years later, I remember him vividly and with great admiration. I have never known anyone so kind, gentle and smart. I'll bet he was a wonderful teacher, colleague, husband and father.

To the Backus family,
Along with several other Hamilton classmates, I was very sad to hear of Dave's passing. Dave was a friend to all with a great sense of humor; compassionate and totally serious about his academic interests, a great fan of Pittsburgh sports teams, Iron City beer, and all types of music. My thoughts and condolences are with all of you at this time.
Sincerely,
Donald Fram

Saddened to hear this news as a former undergrad student of his. Prof. Backus was always generous with his time and counsel, which was a godsend for me, a naïve undergrad anxious about pursuing a career in academia.

His example of patience, selflessness, and non-pretension is one to aspire toward.
