DAVID MAZER Obituary

MAZER--David I.

Our admirable, attentive, strong-minded, insightful, and loving husband and father died peacefully in his home in Carefree, Arizona on March 6 while being cared for by his family, following a long struggle with heart failure. Born October 9, 1927, David graduated from Woodmere Academy in 1945 and then graduated from Yale College in 1951, after a short delay while he served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He founded the David I. Mazer Scholarship at Yale University's School of Management, and he was a strong supporter of the ACLU, Planned Parenthood, and myriad progressive causes. David had a long and happy marriage to Harriet Mazer (married 1951), full of friends, travel, and wine, and raised their family of four children in Scarsdale, NY before moving to Greenwich, Connecticut. He and his beloved brother, Richard Mazer, collaborated as business partners to run a razor blade manufacturing company; David then served as President of Hudson Pulp and Paper. During his tenure at Hudson, David established Florida's first environmentally sensitive and highly rigorous water-quality control system for the paper industry. David was a long-time, golf-loving member of the Quaker Ridge Country Club, and he was also an avid skier, enjoying many vacations at Vail and Stratton with his family, all of whom he placed on skis at a very young age. He prized animated conversation with a wide circle of friends with whom he shared his wry sense of humor and broad interests, which included his longstanding appreciation of modern art and architecture. David is survived by his loving wife, Harriet, and their children: Andrew and his wife, Karen, and sons, Jacob and Ben; Michael and his son, Myles, and stepdaughters Lisa and Anna; Susan and her husband, John Damuth; and Nancy Marasco and her husband, Angelo, and their children, Nina and Tara. He also greatly valued his relationships with his nephew, Kenneth Mazer, and his niece, Margaret Mazer Ogdon. The family will have a private memorial service.
