EDWARD HARRIS Obituary

HARRIS--Edward D., Jr. Alpha Omega Alpha, the National Medical Honor Society, records with sorrow the death of our leader and Executive Secretary, Ted Harris. From 1997 until his death, Ted led the organization and its 120 chapters with unwavering dedication to excellence in medicine. As Editor of the Pharos, a journal published by AOA, he oversaw its transformation to a quarterly format dealing with all aspects of medicine. He also compiled an anthology called Creative Healers: A Collection of Essays, Reviews, and Poems from The Pharos, 1938-1998, published by AOA in 2004. Ted became Executive Secretary after a distinguished career in academic medicine. Educated at Dartmouth University and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Harris was a rheumatologist who was past President of the American College of Rheumatology and coauthored "Kelley's Textbook of Rheumatology," a standard in the field. He received the Presidential Gold Medal from the American College of Rheumatology in 2007. He was past Chairman of Medicine at Stanford University. At the time of his death, he was the George DeForest Barnett Professor Emeritus of Medicine. Past governor of the American College of Physicians' NJ and Northern California chapters, president of the California Academy of Medicine, he was named a fellow in the British Royal College of Physicians in 2002. Ted's intellect, wit and strong leadership are an enduring legacy.
