GEORGE ADAMS Obituary

ADAMS--George Bell, 80, of Manhattan and Old Field, NY, died on April 24, 2011 at home in Manhattan after a valiant battle with cancer. He will be profoundly missed by his beloved family, friends and former colleagues. Survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Lucy. Loving father of Lisa (Jim Rowe), Marea, George Jr. (Jean) and Alison (Peter Collery) and adored "PopPop" of Chris and Lucia Rowe; Eliza, Mimi, and Alison Butler; George and Kate Adams; and Claire, Ned, and Elizabeth (Bip) Collery. Born and raised in New York City, he graduated from Yale University in 1952 and from Harvard Law School in 1957. He served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army (Artillery) 1952 - 1954. He worked his entire legal career at Debevoise & Plimpton. Chairman of the firm's corporate department 1988 - 1993 and managing partner of its London office 1993 - 1996. He served as an arbitrator for the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission; a director of the Lawyers Alliance for World Security and a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York; Chairman of the Board of Sarah Lawrence College; President of The Greater New York Fund (United Way of New York City); trustee and executive committee member of the American Trust for the British Library; fellow of the Pierpont Morgan Library; member of the Yale University Council; and member of the Board of Visitors of the CUNY Law School. In retirement, he co-founded Gray Matters, an advisory group of retired professionals offering services to community based organizations. The funeral service will be held at 12:00pm, on Friday, April 29, 2011 at St. Ignatius Loyola, 980 Park Avenue at 84th Street. Interment will be private.
