GEORGE MAMALES Obituary

MAMALES--George.

(1931 - 2016), Korean War Veteran, accomplished ballet dancer, student of Joseph and Clara Pilates, and master teacher of both the Pilates technique and ballet, passed away at St. Luke's Hospital in Manhattan on September 11, 2016. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1931, he served in the Korean War, and then trained with the San Francisco Ballet and the School of American Ballet. He danced professionally with American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, Ruth Page of Chicago, Ballet Alicia Alonzo, Brooklyn Ballet, and Radio City Music Hall. A committed advocate for health and wellness, George taught by example, exercising daily, juicing, and living a healthy and inspired life until being tragically struck by a delivery truck on August 23, 2016 on the Upper West Side. He is survived by three of his seven siblings, Nellie, Peter and Sam. George taught the classical Pilates technique and classical ballet to an array of aspiring and accomplished dancers, actors, and singers. He loved dance, and had a beautiful inner circle of close friends who will miss him dearly. Donations in his honor can be made to his favorite charity, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

So sad to see that George has passed. I first had class with him when he was a guest teacher on Long Island back in the 80s. Throughout later years I would run into him in class and we would have such nice conversations about ballet technique. He was always so interesting to talk to!
My condolences to the family.

I just learned that my most revered ballet teacher passed away. He remains with me to this day though I have not studied with him for almost 50 years. He taught me that "ballet is simple," unlocking for me a lifetime of beautiful movement which continues to this day to enrich my soul. I have thought of him often over the years as I continue to dance with a soul filled with joy. Rest in peace my dearest teacher! I wish I could have told you in person!

Dear family of George, I am so sad at this news. George was a good friend and helped me with my rather shaky ballet technique and introduced me to Janice Groman, another irreplaceable friend and influence. We all chanted together and I'll continue to chant for his enlightenment and peace. Love. Carlyn

George never refused to help any student with Pilates work. George's Pilates sessions are never limited by time. George does everything the individual student needs. His generosity only wants the work to be good.
