HARRY WELLINGTON Obituary

WELLINGTON--Harry H. The New York Law School community mourns the passing of Harry H. Wellington, Professor of Law and Dean Emeritus at New York Law School. Born in 1926 in New Haven, Connecticut, Dean Wellington received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1947 and his law degree from Harvard in 1952. Upon graduation from Harvard, he clerked for United States Circuit Judge Calvert Magruder and later for United States Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter. Dean Wellington's academic career began at Stanford Law School where he taught for one year. He then joined the faculty at Yale Law School where he flourished as a scholar and teacher, and where he served as Dean from 1975 to 1985. In 1983, he was named Sterling Professor of Law. In 1992, upon his retirement from Yale, Dean Wellington joined New York Law School as President and Dean. As Dean, Wellington had a major impact on the image and reputation of New York Law School, by putting together and overseeing a first-rate faculty, whose well-established scholarship continues to earn respect and admiration from the legal community. He remained Dean of New York Law School for nine years until 2001, and in 2007, he retired from teaching. He also served on the Law School's Board of Trustees. Dean Wellington was awarded the President's Medal of Honor during the Law School's 2011 Commencement Exercises for his significant contributions to the history of New York Law School. During his distinguished career, Dean Wellington's numerous writings on legal process earned him a reputation as a scholar whose nuance and subtle style, just as in his teaching and lecturing, served to illuminate complex issues and to make them completely comprehensible. The Law School community will remember Dean Wellington's inspiring leadership, unswerving dedication to the rule of law, and devotion to teaching and to the legal profession. We extend our condolences to his wife Sheila and his children and grandchildren. Arthur N. Abbey, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Richard A. Matasar Dean and President
