HIMAN BROWN Obituary

BROWN--Himan, 99, died peacefully at his home in Manhattan on Friday June 4th 2010 at 8:13pm. He was Father to Barry Kenneth Brown of California and Hilda Joan Brown of Arizona. Grandfather to Melina Celeste Brown and Barrie Kristen Brown. Beloved great-grandfather "Papa Hymie" to William Samuel Brown, Zoe Judith Mildred Sansted, Zachary Dakota Aloysius Sansted and Zia Eva Dora Sansted, all of Connecticut, he was also father-in-law to Judith Ann Brown of Manhattan. He was the Widow of Mildred Brown and Shirley Goodman. He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel Brown and Dora Arkis Brown who were immigrants from Odessa, Russia, His brothers Mende Brown and Nathan Brown. He also leaves behind his beloved caretaker Zulfiya Ziyakhodjaev, who gave structure, meaning, and love to his final years, his great friend and doctor Cameron Hernandez of Mt Sinai Visiting Doctors, who he admired as a doctor and loved as a friend, a neighborhood full of people who loved him, and a bustling building full of devoted staff who were more than just that to him; they looked out for him, listened to him and enabled him to remain the independent guy that he was until the very end. He was a member of the community of North Stamford, CT, where he spent every weekend and most summers for his entire life, and he leaves behind a group of friends there who have been a tremendous foundation, providing a retreat to a very intense and creative mind. He also leaves a wonderful, talented, and devoted group of actors who he has worked with for years and who have remained his loyal friends and creative inspiration throughout more years than any may want to admit. He surely joins those who left this earth before him at some heavenly table-reading, throwing a cue, joking with Zero, and listening to Mercy growl out a laugh. He grew up in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn, fluent in Yiddish, and only learned English upon his entry into public school. Steeped in music and great classics, he played violin, and excelled intellectually, while attending Boy's High School with the likes of Bugsy Seigel and The Amboy Dukes. He attended Brooklyn College and Brooklyn Law School graduating as valedictorian with a law degree in 1931, but acting was his great passion, and he already was producing and performing in live theater, Catskills revues, and on the fast growing medium of radio. Legendary creator, producer, director of radio drama, beginning in 1927 with the Hi Brow Readings, he was a one man show, often seen riding a horse in Central Park or walking the country roads of his Stamford, CT retreat while editing scripts with a red pencil, he was a mysterious figure to many but a regular guy to those that knew him. Some of his notable series include The Rise of the Goldbergs, Dick Tracy, Adventures of the Thin Man, Inner Sanctum Mysteries, Grand central Station, and the Peabody Winning CBS Radio Mystery Theater. In the 1950s he bought Players Studios at 221 West 26th Street, now Chelsea Studios, to produce his shows. He was a Founding Member of the Director's Guild of America, proud AFTRA member, a philanthropist and founder of The Radio Drama Network to propagate the spoken word, and was devoted to health care causes and the issues facing people over 50. He was a proud liberal, intellectual, art collector, and legendarily frugal. A member of the Radio Hall of Fame, Brown is the recipient of the American Broadcast Pioneer and the Peabody Award. Brown has taught audio drama at Brooklyn College and the School of Visual Arts. He has lived at the same apartment on Central Park West since 1938. He was awarded a doctorate of Humane Letters by Brooklyn College in 2003. Services will be private, The family urges that in Lieu of flowers donations be sent to the Visiting Doctors of Mt Sinai, Attn: Dr Cameron Hernandez, 5 East 102nd Street, New York, NY 10029.

Thanks to Himan Brown, my parents never had difficulty in my going to bed. Every weekday evening at 10:07 PM and on weekend evenings at both 10:07 PM and 11:07 PM, the "CBS Radio Mystery Theater" would begin. The world of imagination Mr. Brown created was exciting, frightening, and always inspiring. Thanks to him, the medium of radio dramas will endure and continue to welcome listeners through "the creaking door."

I am glad Melina Brown provided for this opportunity to write tributes to Himan Brown. I am so grateful to Himan Brown for his amazing efforts to produce great radio, especially CBS Radio Mystery Theater. I grew up listening to Mystery Theater on my old radio and it greatly expanded my imagination, vocabulary and literary knowledge. I cannot imagine my childhood without Himan Brown Radio. If only the current generation of youth could listen to these brain stimulating programs- and they can! Because Himan Browns Radio programs live on in new mediums. I wish that Himan Brown and all the talent involved in Radio Mystery Theater could somehow know that their creative energies are being listened to on people's IPads and other new technologies. There is a super Website www.cbsrmt.com that has ALL episodes of CBS Radio Mystery Theater available for everyone to enjoy again as adults, or for the first time for the new generation of Radio listeners on radio and computers. There are other Websites and other venues that have other Himan Brown productions available to listen to as well. Thank you Himan Brown for your lifetime of providing wonderful quality entertainment. I also want to send condolences to his family- As we say in Hebrew- Hamakom Yenachem Eschem Betoch Shaarei Avlei Tzion V'Yerushalayim.

I recall those dark rides in the late seventies when I struggled to tune in the CBSRMT. What great nights when it came in! Thank you, Mr. Brown, for your lifetime of incredible creativity. You are missed.

As a child, I listened to the CBSRMT all the time and still do when I find it online. I can safely say it helped shape my interest in what I read and ultimately what I do for work. It gave me a keen interest in the spoken word and always reminded me what power the imagination has. Theater of the mind, how true. Thank you, Mr. Brown for that...

I started listening to Himan's Radio Mystery Theatre in 1977 when I was twelve. I tried to never miss a night. After 1982 I discovered old time radio, thanks to Mr. Brown's revival.

He said, "When we meet again, AND WE WILL..." on the last Dec '82 broadcast. And it is true, every day I have a Himan Brown radio show playing.

I am a pen-and-ink artist and Himan's shows are the single biggest influence on my drawing. There was no better cast on radio; Himan had an ear for each actor's type of voice, and the role they should play. He is missed, but his work is well-preserved and lives on.

I'm so glad Melina Brown left this guest book online so we can still pay our respects to Himan. I met him through my friend Hilda, his daughter. I remember being enchanted with him and with his extraordinary home on CPW when Hilda brought me over to introduce us.

Because I am an actress, Himan was so kind as to cast me in episodes of his amazing radio shows for the CBS Radio Mystery Theater where I was privileged to perform with some legends of film and theater.

Himan, if you are still keeping an eye on us here, I want you to know I think of you so often with affection, and it was only when I was trying to phone you today to tell you I'm coming to New York in July that I learned that you had left us. God bless you, dear man. I am sure we will meet again.

Himan Brown was the subject of my very first published article, "After 41 years the clock still ticks," The Washington Post, Nov. 12, 1976. I'll always be grateful to Mr. Brown for giving me the interview at CBS Radio and permitting me to sit in on the rehearsal and recording of two Mystery Theater programs. He was gracious and forthcoming about his life in radio; I had listened to "Inner Sanctum," "Grand Central Station" and others when I was a child. I searched the internet for him tonight (Thanksgiving 2010) and learned he had died. God bless you, Mr. Brown; you have already blessed us with your gifted presence.

Mr. Brown was a mentor to me, a recent graduate of the Newhouse School at Syracuse University, at my first job answering phones for the daytime drama Guiding Light in 1983...taped at his 26th Street studios. He would often ask me, somewhat surreptitiously, to make Xerox copies for him of whatever he was working on. Of course I obliged...using the massive copy machine that I was expert running! In turn, he shared his stories and his counsel with me. I will never forget his kindness, his wisdom and his advice...I think I am one of the few producers working today who can say he learned from the great Himan Brown.I knew then and know now, I was so fortunate to have had that chance.

Like so many here, I never knew Himan Brown the man; but Himan Brown the director has been an indispensable part of my life since the CBS Radio Mystery Theater. That show led me to discover old time radio; and in so many great shows I heard, the one constant was Himan Brown. I cannot attest to his personality; but I know that his genius entertained millions, and I've read much good about his philanthropy. By those measures, he was a truly great man.

My deepest sympathies to the Brown family. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Early bedtime (10 p.m.)in the late 70's was made so much easier thanks to CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Over 30 years later, I still listen to OTR episodes every single night. In fact, I sleep with them. I have the best dreams in the world that way!

Thanks and RIP, Hi.

God bless Himan Brown, he would be very happy to know that, on the night of his passing, I stayed up all night listening to my beloved CBSRMT. I had no idea of his passing until I just now googled him. I LOVE what he did for radio, I am 48 years old and the Mystery Theatre was a very important of my teenage years. Cheers, Himan, God Bless. Great memories of my childhood, huddled under bedsheets with radio to my ear. It was 10:00 every weeknight, time for CBS Radio Mystery Theater on 1180 WHAM in Rochester, NY. I was supposed to be sleeping. Now I have shared some of the broadcasts with my enthusiastic students. Himan Brown and his magic will live on.

I remember clearly listening to a little portable radio in my bedroom after dark, scared out of my mind by the creeeak of the door and E.G., Marshall's voice. I couldn't get enough of Mystery Theater then, and I still love radio drama. Thank you, Mr. Brown.

June 6, 2010

To the greatest reason for me to have a OTR show collection and fan club I send my sorrows on your passing-maybe you and all the greats of radio can now get together for one big show-God Bless!!

Thirty years ago when we moved to Stamford we were thrilled to find our neighbor was Hi Brown, the man of 1000 stories. We never tired of hearing about the CBS Radio Mystery theater days. He amazed us later in his life when he took to the Internet but shaved 20 years off his age so his new colleagues wouldn't think he was old hat. Melina please accept our condolences and sincere sorrow upon your loss

I used to like to listen to old radio shows on WBAI (?) back when I was a kid in the 1960's and they would run the shows from the 1930's. I used to love those old-time radio shows. I could never have known when I listened to adventure serials back then that I would blessed with the friendship of the granddaughter of those shows' creator many years later. Himan Brown was a true visionary, an American immigrant success story, and leaves an astonishing legacy of accomplishment. My condolences to his family, friends, and the many, many people whose path he crossed and whose lives he enriched in his long and remarkable life.

One of the greats, a true pioneer of broadcasting. Sincere condolences to his family, may you take comfort in knowing that every time an announcer says something on the radio, they are building on what Hi helped to create so many years ago. It was truly one of my career highlights to meet Himan and "negotiate" with him.
