HOWARD SACHS Obituary

SACHS--Howard, PhD, M.D., 85, died December 6, 2011. Survivor of the WWII battle for Okinawa. He became a pioneering scientist in neuroendocrinology after getting his doctorate in biochemistry from Columbia University in 1953. At age 48, he left a prestigious scientific career and became a physician, with one goal--to help people. Dr. Howard Sachs is survived by his loving daughters, Susan, Linda and Nancy.

He gave a video oral history in 2002 of his time fighting in Okinawa as a rifleman PVT 1st Class in 1944. ( see at Library of Congress Howard Sachs Collection.) After surviving Okinawa he went on to be a fatherof three girls, receive a PHD in biochemistry, become a pioneer in brain biochemistry research and then finally at age 48 became a medical doctor. Living in Africa helping treat tropical diseases in rural areas of undeveloped countries.
