JOHN SUTHERLAND Obituary

SUTHERLAND--John C., born September 21, 1928 died peacefully on April 20 at his Brooklyn home surrounded by his brother David and his friends Barbara and Gabe Plumer. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Mollie Reeve and Janet Sutherland and by his partner and friend Martin Stanford. He is survived by his brother, his brother-in-law William Reeve, his nephews Michael and Timothy Reeve, and by Timothy's children. He received B.A. and M.A. degrees from Yale University in 1950 and 1952 and served in an intelligence unit in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Cold War. His later professional career included work as a trust officer for Irving Trust, as a senior portfolio manager for Lord Abbett, and as a private consultant for Nakagama and Wallace. He generously supported many Brooklyn and Park Slope charities, and served as treasurer of the Montauk Club. He enjoyed spending time at his second home in Honolulu, Hawaii. Contributions may be made to the John Sutherland Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Brooklyn Music School, 126 Saint Felix Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217, a fund whose purpose is to defray tuition expenses for music students at the school. www.brooklynmusicschool.org

I worked for Mr. Sutherland back in 1979 through the 80's at Lord Abbett & Co. I just learned of his passing. What a kind, genteel man and employer. I think of him often still and will light a candle for him in prayer this evening. May God bless him and keep him in everlasting peace.
