Charlotte, I hope you feel the great love from all of us coming to you. Seeing the love and dedication and tenderness you and John shared, so many, many years ago at the Public, was a wonderful thing. To know that it continued to the very end...is sublime.

Being onstage with John in "ANYTHING GOES" was one of my favorite memories of all time. He was not only one of my favorite actors but one of my favorite people on this planet! Charlotte, I am sending love to you and the family and just know that we all adored John so very very much . I do believe we will not see the likes of him again -he was supremely gifted but also so very original and so very fun and dear . I will miss him so very very much. Julie Halston

My heavy heartfelt sadness is made lighter by John's memory, kindness and talent. I hope you can grief your loss by knowing how many people John made laugh, cry, and love. No amount of love and appreciation seems adequate right now. I and my husband met him several times back stage through the years. He is a darling sweet soul and may you always remember his spirit and light.

John was first and foremost a gentle man with a finely honed gift of comedy. I understudied John in one, High Society, which was not a success and again in the hit show Anything Goes. He was the truly funny, consistently good actor whether in a flop or a hit. He left me a note on a night that I would be going on for him and in it he said he was sorry he wouldn't be seeing my performance so he could steal the good bits. I assure you any good bits I may have had were bits I had already stolen from John! I'm pretty sure John is sitting at the end of a bar somewhere nursing a glass of wine and studying people's foibles to use in his own inemitable fashion on some piece of business that may defy logic but will get a huge laugh as only he was able. Rest in peace dear John.

Sorry not to be on town Friday. I got such joy out of running into John on a regular basis in our neighborhood. There were always theatre stories to swap (most recently an account of his dealings with Dr. Max Jacobsen) and stories which he would draw out in that inimitably bemused voice. I can only begin to say how much I admired his work and how much I enjoyed his company. My condolences.

July 7, 2016

he was the only "Oscar" in SWEET CHARITY. Loved him in 2002 in the revival of INTO THE WOODS as well...wonderful wonderful actor...:(
