I had the privilege of speaking with Joe shortly before June 16th, it was an extraordinary meeting, a gentle, loving, profound, and yet witty and fun conversation, I will never forget you Joe, for all the joy, laughter, and insight, you have opened my heart in so many ways, as you actually told me, you are up there still designing and enjoying it SO much!!! much love from Johanna Vandenberg, friend of 20 years.

JOSEPH, JOSEPH, JOSEPH, WHAT A REMARKABLE LIFE. RECOGNITION FOR A FANTASTIC CAREER, RESPECT FOR YOUR INTEGRITY AND HUMILITY, ADMIRATION FOR YOUR WIT, STYLE AND TALENT, AND PROBABLY A LITTLE ENVY OF YOUR DANCE MOVES.
BUT WHAT AMAZED ME THE MOST WAS YOUR ABILITY TO MOVE PEOPLE FORWARD. TO MOVE THEM BEYOND THEIR FEARS AND INIBITIONS. TO MOVE THEM TO HIGHER GOALS AND GREATER JOYS. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU KNEW YOU WERE DOING THIS, BUT YOU DID, AND I KNOW BECAUSE I WAS CHANGED.
DURING YOUR ILLNESS YOU RECEIVED MANY LETTERS WITH MOVING AND POETIC WORDS BY OTHERS THAT YOU CHANGED, AND YOU WERE SUPRISED. I ALSO KNOW THAT YOU WERE VERY, VERY PROUD.
JOSEPH, WHEN YOU FELL ILL YOUR FRIENDS IN NEW YORK, PENSACOLA AND THE THOUGHTS OF FRIENDS AROUND THE WORLD WERE THERE FOR YOUR COMFORT AND STRENGTH. NO TASK WAS TOO GREAT BECAUSE WE WERE HAPPY TO GIVE BACK WHAT WE HAD RECEIVED, LOVE AND RESPECT. BUT, JOSEPH, TRUE TO FORM, IT WAS YOU WHO COMFORTED US.
JOSEPH, THAT IS WHAT I WILL REMEMBER, ALWAYS.

Dear friend of over twenty years, so many happy times shared and to be remembered, your humor, gracious friendship, individual style, enthusiasm, natural desire to inquire, and of course your talent shared and acknowledged. May the blessings of your friendship continue for us all.
