KENWORTH MOFFETT Obituary

MOFFETT--Kenworth

William (1934-2016). Kenworth William Moffett, 81, died peacefully from complications of heart disease in Stamford, CT on June 21, 2016. Kenworth (Ken) was born in East Orange, NJ, the son of Kenworth Alvin Moffett and Kathryn Lily Moffett. Moffett earned his bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 1960 and his doctorate in art history from Harvard University in 1968, where he became an expert on 19th- and 20th-century art and art criticism, and an advocate of abstract expressionism and color field painting in particular. Early in his career, Moffett achieved full professor of art history at Wellesley College, where he taught from 1969 to 1978. While a professor, he started his tenure as the first Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, a role he held from 1971 to 1984. After five years spent advising art collectors on impressionist, early modern, and contemporary art acquisitions from 1984 to 1989, he served as Director of the Fort Lauderdale Museum from 1989 to 1997 and helped found the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver, CO in 1998. Over the course of his prolific career, he organized or supervised more than 100 exhibitions; built public, private, and corporate collections; co-curated the first large exhibition of American art to tour China; and wrote monographs on Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, Fairfield Porter, and Odd Nerdrum, as well as a volume, New New Painting, which he co-authored with the Belgian critic Marcel Paquet. His dissertation was also published as a book, Meier-Graefe as Art Critic, by Prestel Verlag (Munich) in 1973. During the eighties, he published Moffett's Artletter, which contained news and opinion about the art world and art market, and more recently had an online version, Moffett's Artletter 2.0 http://kenworthwmoffett.net. For the last 25 years of his life, he championed a group of artists called the New New Painters, who he considered to be the successors of Jackson Pollock and the New York School of abstract expressionism and color field painting. He is survived by his wife Cynthia Horvath Moffett, daughter Kathryn (Kay) Moffett, son-in-law Neil Parker, granddaughter Matilda Moffett Parker, and hundreds of friends and artists who loved him.

Ken was a wonderful friend and supporter of my work. The exhibitions he curated at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston were inspirational and helped give me an understanding and appreciation of the best twentieth century art of the time. His frequent visits to my studio were so appreciated and his helpful critiques of my work and encouragement of my process were invaluable. I miss him to this day and wish he knew how helpful he was to very many artists and collectors. An example of his contribution to the arts is the recent exhibition in 2025 of the Arthur and Mariot Solomon Collection donated to the Harvard Art Museums. Ken was an advisor to the Solomons for their collection of contemporary art.

Seeing the great 1972-3 exhibit ('Abstract Painting in the 70s') Ken curated at the BMFA inspired me to give up photography and become a painter. Fifteen years later, critiquing my paintings, he offered a comment so wise it set my painting free. His generosity and belief in my work lasted through all our fierce arguments, and my leaving the New New group in 2002. We kept talking right to the end of his life, our phone conver-sations full of love of art and one another. Ken was the most deeply generous person I've ever known.

I will always miss Ken. He was a very dear friend who cared a great deal about artists. There was no one quite like him . He had a way of engaging the world that was disarming, all with insight and integrity. And he knew how to have fun.

Thank you, Ken, for your teaching, counsel and kindness at Wellesley. I read the Times every day and feel foolish to have missed this. Just wondering about you this morning and Googled your name. Safe journey to the other side. You are missed.

I had the honor and the pleasure of working under Kenworth, during his tenure at the Museum of Art, in Fort Lauderdale, for almost a decade. He was a special individual, who loved his craft and did his best to help any one, who needed or requested his advice. I shall always be grateful to him for encouraging me to trust my judgement and face situations with equanimity and valor. I was a better curator because of his wisdom and guidance. May his soul rest in peace. My most sincere condolences to his family and close friends.

Kay's note to friends and family came just as I was reviewing Ken's insightful essay on the artist Friedel Dzubas from 1975 in which he declares with characteristic incisiveness that recent pictures "establish him as one of the foremost painters working today. What he did for Friedl was extraordinary in terms of friendship and curatorial generosity. Through much of Friedl's career they remained close, albeit with the inevitable bumps and jarrings that come with high-keyed temperaments and shared emotionality. Ken was generous to me as well, as I came to learn about Friedl's work. Saddened by his loss, I will remember him through his sensitive and well-phrased writings, which I keep close at hand. My warmest condolences to Kay. Patricia

No one can forget the sunny disposition of the man who
always had the courage of his convictions and who pitted
the experience of his open, sophisticated eye against the commercial tone of our time.
He always looked for art of substance rather than trends.
His writing and spirit are a discovery for the future readers, alive, expressive.

In Dr. Moffett's honor we will hold an exhibition next year
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF NEW NEW PAINTING
A Tibute to Kenworth W. Moffett

He was the founding theoretician of the international art movement called New New Painting which he helped to launch in Paris in 1992. It consisted of nine U.S. artists and two Canadian artists.
Many exhibitions around the world have followed, and the
NEW NEW innovations have been imitated in many New York galleries to this day. In 2000 he organized a huge NNP exhibition at the symbolic location of the famous 1913
Armory Show (which first introduced modern art to
the then conservative America).
He called it "NNPThe Real Avantguard.

Ken was a very knowledgable and kind person who I'll always remember as hard working and happy because whenever I saw him he was critiquing art and so happy. Rest in peace Ken

The world has lost one of the great art critics , sadly, and a great curator of exhibitions, director of museums, but aside from that,I have lost my best friend of over 38 years. In the first five years we were together as a couple you never ceased to amaze me with your brilliance, I could ask you anything about anything, you were surely a genius, there is not doubt I have yet to meet another person who knew so much about everything. And I was your best student , full time companion, traveling to studios, meeting so many artists, you opened a new world to me. In the next 8 years as a married couple ,we did so many things, went so many places around the world looking at art.It was a joy to work on many catalogues, books, and exhibitions it was more than I had ever imagined. When you took the job in Ft Lauderdale as a director for the first time, I had hard choices to make, but it was clear even during and after divorce we would always remain the best of friends, working together, as always and traveling still as friends. You came with us ,our group The New New Painters to our first European exhibition, wrote many, many catalogs, articles and were just such a huge part of "us" it is hard to imagine you are no longer here. You came with us to Prague, which was wonderful to have you along, you were so generous with your time, visiting all of our studios, then setting up your website about The New New Painters and all the artists you loved so much.Words cannot express how much you will be missed. It was a thrill to have known you and all the people you introduced to me.How can I ever thank you, I do not know. rest in peace Ken, Nicholas and I miss you already.Love always, Lucy
