SCANLON--Dr. Laura Polla Dr. Laura Polla Scanlon died peacefully surrounded by friends and family January 29, 2013 due to complications from leukemia. She was born on October 3, 1937 in Auburn, New York to Lorenzo and Elizabeth Polla. She graduated with honors from Nazareth College and earned her Ph.D. from The Union Institute where she focused on her work as President of the Board (1975-1981) of the National Congress of Neighborhood Women (NCNW). As a professor at New York City College of Technology, CUNY for more than thirty-five years, Dr. Scanlon demonstrated unwavering passion and dedication to the education of working class men and women that stemmed from her life-long love of learning. With boundless creativity and limitless enthusiasm, she pushed the boundaries of the classroom to develop effective student-centered teaching/learning strategies. Laura will also be remembered for her sparkling wit and adventurous spirit. Whether she was living in a hut on the beach in Costa Rica, trekking the mountains of Nepal, or right at home in Park Slope, she embraced everyone and everyday. Laura will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Caitlin Scanlon of Los Angeles, Rebecca Shim of Phoenicia, and Elizabeth Hyman of Santa Monica; her two sisters, Carmela Beaston of Binghampton and Rose Llewellyn of Auburn; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and countless close friends. She is predeceased by her sister Mary O'Connor. The visitation will be from 2:00PM - 5:00PM and 7:00PM - 9:00PM on Sunday, February 3, 2013 at the Scotto Funeral Home, Brooklyn, NY. The funeral service will be held at 10:00AM on Monday, February 4, 2013 at St. Bonifice Church. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
