I am so sad to hear of Mark's passing. I was a patient of his at Mt Sinai and although our relationship was one of doctor- patient, I could tell, of course, he was a sweet wonderful guy. He touched countless people around the world with his medical knowledge, his humor, and his heart. The worlld is a poorer place without him.

"Dr. Babyatsky was a very special doctor who showed so much care for me over a period of 17 years. He was an extraordinary man. I am so blessed to have known him. I traveled each visit from Connecticut to NYC and would have gladly traveled from Connecticut to California if I had to do so. I am extremely saddened to hear of his sudden passing. My deepest sympathies extend out to his dear family, which I know he loved so very much."

Mark was a wonderful mentor who challenged me to think broadly. Prior to the end of residency in 2004, he requested that I read Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning". Thereafter, we discussed this book and how one can continue in the face of unspeakable tragedy.

Mark, you will be truly missed - may your family be comforted.

My deep condolescences to the Babyatsky family during this solemn and soulful time... I have known Mark(affectionately "Babs") for 50 years, growing-up in the same joyful circle of the 'Adee Towers family'. I always remember Babs with an infectious smile and spirit, willing and determined to reach-out to anyone for conversation with good humor. I have read many of his friends'/colleagues' comments, realizing his breadth of humanity was amazingly far-reaching and profound. Although Mark and I have not kept in-touch over the past 20 years, his 'touch of grace and humility' continues to live on in how I lead my life. God Bless!

Mark had the incredible ability to bring out the best in everyone he met. A generation of physicians were lucky enough to train under him. In talking to colleagues in the last few days, it is clear that years later, many of us still aspire to live up to his faith in us. His influence will continue to bring more thoughtful and humanistic care to patients for years to come.

August 30, 2014

I would like to start by saying how sorry I am for the loss of Mark to his wife and children and sister and family members. Mark was a neighbor of mine in Adee Towers as well as a very good friend of my brother Dan Katz. He lived one floor directly above us and I could always hear him running around his apartment. He also spent a lot of time in my apartment visiting my brother. He was always such a nice boy and young man growing up and still remand friends with my brother till the he started his residency. I think after that as many people they lost touch thru the years but Mark was never forgotten. I am sorry I never tried to connect with him in Facebook like I have with most of my childhood friends.
I was so deeply shocked when I heard the news it is very sad to loose someone so young. Once again my condolences.

I am heartbroken that my former program director and mentor Mark Babyatsky passed away. I buried it in the back of my mind to get through the day, but on the way home it hit me hard. He gave me confidence in myself as a physician when that's what i needed most. He went to bat for me more than once. You don't forget people like that. I try to carry his legacy by teaching the way he taught. Caring for people the way he cared. I'll miss you Babs and i'm sure wherever you are you're still the smartest person in the room.

I am SO saddened to hear of Dr. Babyatsky's passing. He cared for me, an IBD patient, when he was just a resident at Mt. Sinai more than 25 years ago. I was so impressed with him that I wrote a letter to the president of the medical school commending him. I asked them to keep an eye on Dr. Babyatsky, that we were going to need more doctors like him. And we do...

My sincerest condolences to Dr. Babyatsky's family. His loss is heartbreaking to anyone lucky enough to know and work with him. As soon as I met "Babs" on my interview day for the Sinai residency program, I saw he was a one-of-a-kind mentor and person. He made all of his trainees better doctors and people by leading by example. The depth of his medical knowledge, and more importantly the depth of his compassion, never ceased to amaze us. I am grateful to have known him.

I wish I'd known Dr. Babyatsky better. From my brief encounters with him, I was struck by his gentleness and humility. From several young people in the Genetics community whose lives he touched/shaped (Noura, Huma, Angelika) and from my daughter Pooja, I have heard so much more. His family and colleagues should be very proud of the legacy he leaves-

My sincere condolences to the Babyatsky family. His sense of humor and modest genius solidified my desire to train at Mt. Sinai. Always loved hearing his "How are youuu?!" whenever we passed in the halls. Thanks for your compassion, matchmaking skills and support in helping me arrive where I am today. I am forever thankful to you.

I had the honor and privilege of being a medical student under Dr. Babyatsky. His enthusiasm, humor, and willingness to teach were a rare set of qualities amongst medical educators, and his influence was far-reaching. He had the unique ability to both be an excellent clinician while still able to connect with medical students half his age, impressing us with his experience and charming persona.

While in the end I chose to pursue a field other than internal medicine, he nevertheless influenced the way I approached patients and thought about the doctor-patient relationship. His loss is felt not only by the Mount Sinai community, but by hundreds of other students, residents, fellows, and faculty lucky enough to have worked with him. My deepest condolences to his wife and family.

I speak not only for myself but hundreds of others when I say Babs was the best educator, mentor I have ever had. He not only knew and taught us medicine but showed us how caring, humanistic, intelligent medicine should be practiced. I wanted to be like him. At our interview, he said there was laughing gas in the air with the goal of making us feel good and would go away after we matched. For me, every time I saw Babs, that was always in the air. We will always remember him as a human who cared and showed it, lightened up the room and always made us want to be better humans, physicians, colleagues. Thank you for all you did. We love you and are sending our love and prayers to your family- forever in our memory

It is very hard to say goodbye.

Dearest Cousin, Mark,
Your light will continuosly guide us through the darkest places
Your wisdom and and your humor will keep smiles upon our faces
And if by chance we forget the many stories and the fables,
Your family, friends, students and peers will do what they are able.
Consummate leader with a compassionate heart,
You balanced medicine and healing as an intricate art
You continue to teach invaluable lessons to the masses
So we will laugh, live and continuously love until grief and darkness passes.
Love is a contagious story and We promise it will always be shared
Your light is your life and will forever be felt and
cherished by the many who so deeply care.
Rest in peace our family "mensch" your influence will be felt forever,
And we will always hold you close until the end of never.

We adore, fiercely love, respect and honor you for always ,

I am truly shocked and heartbroken by the loss of my friend and mentor Mark. I was fortunate enough to interact with Mark during every phase of my training, from med school, through residency, during my chief resident year, and finally through GI fellowship. It was my time with him on the GI consult elective during residency that clinched my decision to pursue a career in GI. He was amazingly gifted mentor and leader, and his guidance and vision helped elevate Sinai's residency program to a truly elite level. More than that, he was a true friend who was always supportive and generous. His smile and enthusiasm touched countless trainees, and we are all better people and physicians for it. We should all be so lucky to have known and worked with someone like Mark. My prayers and condolences go out to Liz and his beautiful children. RIP Mark, you will be missed always. Keep on singing!!

We are so sorry for your loss. We agree with everything that was said at the service. Even though we only got together a few times it was easy to see how wonderful a person Mark was. Seeing you with Josh and Grant I just wanted to give you all a huge hug. Our Mark made a great choice in best friends when he chose Josh because we can already see how he takes after his father in many ways. We are honored to say we are your friends. John enjoyed talking about cooking with Mark at our house and is sad that he won't get to taste his bolognese or talk more about cooking. Don't hesitate to call us for any reason. Mark, Cyd Silber and I were interns together at Sinai. He was the kindest, most softest spoken, sweetest man. I don't remember him ever raising his voice or having a mean word to say about anyone.
