Like one of the previous guests here, I read thru the NYT obits just about every Sunday. A story such as this is the reason why....to find such a sad but beautiful descripton of one life, that has touched, and will continue to touch many others. I lost my father a few years back, also to cancer. He was a world traveler as well. Ive put out a message to him to make sure he welcomes Mark with bottle of Jameson. Im sure they will swap many stories. I cant wait to begin reading "Three Cents a Mile"

Mark and I were friends at Fordham (class of '72). We both worked at the Kennedy Home for Neglected Dependent Children and he let me tag along on a hitchhiking trip to New Orleans. He was kind, curious, and funny. I'm so glad he had a great life and a wonderful family. I am very sorry for your loss.

Never met Mark. As an avid reader of the NYtimes obits, it sounds like he was honest, warm and funny. Hold hands, cry, laugh.
