MATTHEW LABINE Obituary

LABINE--Matthew Arnold,

passed away peacefully on September 1, 2017, after a lingering illness -- displaying the same strength and courage at the end that characterized his entire life. Greatly loved by all who knew him, Matt is survived by his wife Catharine, son Michael and daughter Ann; sister Eleanor and brother John; father Roland "Clem" Labine and step- mother Deirdre Lawrence; mother-in-law Claudia Scholtz and father-in-law Andrew Scholtz. Born to Roland and Claire Wood Labine in New York on May 5, 1959, Matt was a graduate of St. Ann's School in Brooklyn Heights and Yale University (B.A. Economics 1981). In three years on the Yale varsity heavyweight crew, Matt won two Eastern Sprint Championships, had an undefeated season of 2,000- meter racing, competed in the finals of the Grand Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta in the U.K., and won the Championship Four at the Head of the Charles. He was also in the Yale varsity boat that bested Harvard in the 4- mile race on the Thames River in 1981 -- the first time in 18 years that a Yale crew had defeated Harvard in "The Race." After college, he was on two US National Men's Rowing Teams and won a bronze medal in the 1981 World Championships. He was a finalist in the US Olympic trials in 1980 and in 1984. Matt has been coaching rowing at Fairfield University since 2010. Matt was a talented television writer and won an Emmy Award and four Writers Guild Awards for his work on several daytime dramas where his intelligence and sardonic humor could range freely. Matt's playful nature was also on display at the steam- powered model railway he constructed in the garden at his Darien, CT, home. A devoted husband and father, Matt dispensed kindness and gentle humor to family and friends alike. While his loss is keenly felt, he has left the world a sweeter place.

Dear Catharine, we are so lucky that you brought Matt into our lives, and so sad that he had to leave us so soon. Matt and his family really light up my memories of family get-togethers, especially Matt's laugh and welcoming way with in-laws, not to mention his intelligence, his passions, his opinions on TV and other things - we're going to miss it all. Our sympathies to you and the kids, to Clem, John, and Eleanor, and to everyone who knew and loved him. You take care, much love!

Catherine & family, my condolences to you all on the passing of Matt. I only met you all the one time in 2007 when I visited and operated on Matt's garden steam railway, while on vacation in the US from Australia. The memories of a wonderful day and especially of Matt & his family have stayed with me all these years. Gone but not forgotten.

My deepest condolences to Matt's loved ones. I remember being so touched my Matt's gentleness, sense of humor, and love of the Ramones. Somehow all those things fit well within his personality.

Matt was as kind a person as there was. Always there to help, he coached my son and I when we rowed together at Norwalk (CT) Rowing. Condolences to Catharine and the kids. God Speed.

Catharine, you and Matt were my very first friends in CT, 18 years ago. Whenever I think of Matt, a smile immediately comes to my face. He was a wonderful man and my life is richer for having known him. He is missed, but has left a legacy of light for us all. My condolences to you and your family.
