PARKER LADD Obituary

LADD--Parker B.

Of New York and Palm Beach died peacefully on Tuesday, November 14, in the comfort of his home surrounded by family and friends. He was the son of Gerald and Eldred (Bridges) Ladd of Hardwick, Vermont and a graduate of the University of Vermont. After serving in the US Army he moved to Sweden where he worked as a bookseller, then relocated to Los Angeles before moving to New York. Long a respected executive in the publishing community, he enjoyed a successful career at Charles Scribner's Sons and was also a director at the Association of American Publishers. Following his retirement Parker had a second career as a television producer for the A&E program, Open Book, an interview talk show featuring authors and their work. He was known as a savvy interviewer who always approached his subjects from a unique perspective. Following his television career he went on to develop and produce an interview format breakfast series at the Brazilian Court Hotel called the Book and Author Breakfast. The series was a popular Palm Beach weekly event that drew both bestselling and local authors into lively and interesting conversation replete with wit, charm, and attractive enthusiasm. Parker, along with his husband, international couturier Arnold Scaasi, and their dear friend and journalist Liz Smith, was one of the founders of Literacy Partners Inc., a nonprofit organization that envisions a future in which every parent has the tools to create success for themselves and a better future for their children. Since its inception the organization has helped more than 25,000 adults make better lives for themselves and their families through free adult education classes in New York City. Aside from their passion for adult literacy, Parker, Arnold, and Liz produced an Evening of Readings gala that became one of the most celebrated annual social events for New Yorkers, raising millions to support this worthy cause. A longtime patron of the Quogue Public Library, Parker also produced a book/author program to raise funds for the library. He was also an avid bridge player and could be seen at many tables in New York, Quogue, and Palm Beach. Parker was a loyal and loving companion to his partner and husband of fifty-three years, Arnold Scaasi, who preceded him in death, along with his brother, Keith Ladd. He is survived by many dear friends, his niece, Karen Ladd Baker, and his two nephews Matthew and Adam Ladd, along with his longtime all-around personal assistant, Glendina Weste. A graveside service will be private. Donations may be made to the Scassi-Ladd Book Fund. Information at literacypartners.org.

Parker was one of my dearest friends and shall always remain that way. He was my senior ball date at Burlington (VT) High School, we both attended the University of Vermont, and we worked several summers together at the Ft. William Henry Hotel at Lake George, NY. Parker got me the job as a waitress and I was promoted to Social Hostess. My husband and I enjoyed visiting with Arnold and Parker in Palm Beach over the years and attending the book talks. I will miss you Parker. You will always be in my memory. Love, Martha

To our beloved Parker, you left too early mother earth to be reunited with Arnold but you will not be forgotten. You touched so many lives around you by your kindness, wit, intellect, helping obscure and struggling writers to achieve stardom and recognition. You were a leader in spreading knowledge and culture and your company was always stimulating and special. We will miss your laughter and smile, your soul of an angel and your dear Glendina... With Love Alexandre and Élaine
