PATRICIA NITZBURG Obituary

NITZBURG--Patricia, of NYC and Dublin, NH, daughter of Lucius Thayer and Virginia Speare, died of post-surgical complications on September 29. Her loss is deeply mourned by her daughters Amy Case and Jessica Thayer, her son-in-law Alex Case, other family, friends, and colleagues. She was married from 1960-1982 to Stanley Nitzburg, recently deceased. She graduated from Beaver Country Day School and Smith College, and received a MSW from Columbia University. In 1971 she joined the Jewish Board of Family Services (JBFCS) and served for 34 years. In 1984 the National Academies of Practice in Social Work celebrated her as "A Distinguished Practitioner." She is remembered at JBFCS as "always the voice of sanity" and "a major force in clinical services who understood what it was to be in need. Everybody wanted to work with her." She devoted herself to the lives of others. Her musical passions included the Metropolitan Opera, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She was an avid traveler, and in July had returned from her 12th African Safari to see beloved elephants. A memorial service will be held October 10 at 1pm at The Riverside, 76th and Amsterdam. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the World Wildlife Fund, www.worldwildlifefund.org

Amy and Alex, I'm so sorry for your loss. I don't think words can express the pain of losing both your wonderful parents in the same year. Know that they are in a better place and you and Alex expressed your love to them through your words and deeds throughout their lives. You're a wonderful daughter and Alex the best son-in-law! Love from Mississippi....Sue
