PETER MARKS

MARKS--Peter, 75, died peacefully at home on June 13, 2010, of complications from cancer. A lifetime New Yorker, Peter graduated from the High School of Music & Art in 1952 and from Amherst College in 1956. After a brief stint in publishing, Peter opened the Peter Marks Works of Art, Inc. in 1960, a private gallery specializing in Southeast Asian and Islamic antiquities. He made important contributions to the Asian art field both as a dealer and as an advocate for his profession. He also wrote and published three novels. Following his retirement in 2002, Peter began painting, a passion that had lain dormant for many years. Peter is survived by his wife Jean, his daughter Annie, his son Sam and his wife Lauren Pesso, his son Ben and his wife Elizabeth Morrison and their children Sophie and Eli, and by his brother Walter Marks and his wife Joan Brooker. The funeral will be private. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Art Angels Supplies Fund of the Friends of Fiorello H.
