Richard Goldwater Obituary

GOLDWATER--Richard H., President/Co-Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Archie Comics, passed away on October 2, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. Richard was born and raised in New York City. After college, he joined Archie Comics, the company founded in 1941 by his father, John L. Goldwater, Louis Silberkleit and Maurice Coyne. Starting in the mailroom, he worked his way up to his current position where he shared the helm with his lifelong friend and Louis' son, Chairman/Co-Publisher Michael Silberkleit. Richard oversaw the editorial content of comics published by the company and always took great pride in ensuring that the company honored the bond of trust it has established with parents to only publish comics with wholesome content. Riverdale may not be the town you live in, but Richard aspired to make it the type of town that you wished you could live in. When not at work, Richard was an avid boater and loved to frequent local restaurants with family, friends and colleagues from the comic book industry. He is survived by his three daughters, Lisa, Taylor and Summer. A Memorial service will be held at the Zion Memorial Chapel, 785 E. Boston Post Rd., Mamaroneck, NY 914-381-1809 on Wednesday October 10 at 2:00 pm. The family asks that memorial contributions be sent to The Center for Hope, 590 Post Rd., Darien, CT 06820. 203-655-4693.
