RUTH NUSSBAUM Obituary

NUSSBAUM--Ruth, beloved matriarch of Temple Israel of Hollywood. Adored wife of the late Rabbi Max Nussbaum, cherished mother of Hannah Marsh and Jeremy (Charline) Nussbaum, loving grandmother and friend to Daniel and Cindy Marsh, Margaret and Sharone Sinai, Gabriel Nussbaum and Elizabeth Wood, and Lily Nussbaum. Ruth was also the adoring "GG" to Ruby, Max, Jake, and Gabriella. An international leader in Zionist causes, Ruth was a national Vice Chairman of ARZA and in 1996 received an honorary doctorate from Hebrew Union College. Born in Berlin in 1911 and married to the love of her life, the Berlin Jewish leader and firebrand, Rabbi Max Nussbaum in 1938, Ruth and her husband fought tirelessly to rescue Jews from Nazi Germany. In late 1940, Ruth and Max immigrated to the U.S. to a welcoming congregation in Oklahoma and then to their permanent home at Temple Israel in Hollywood. Throughout her life Ruth felt strongly that the Civil Rights Movement was the American parallel to the Zionist fight; She fought actively for racial equality in the United States. Her love of literature and music was legendary as was her deep friendships which crossed many generations. Her memory will be as a blessing.

My mother Marina used to work for her. I remember I loved going with my mom to work because she would share her stories with me. One of which I remember the most was when she told me and showed me a picture with anne frank and how they were neighbors. I will always remember Mrs. Nussbaum and I pray for her family as they go through this difficult time.
