STEFAN KANFER Obituary

KANFER--Stefan,

85, of Sleepy Hollow, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on June 19, 2018. Stefan was born in Manhattan, raised his family in New York City and Hastings-on-Hudson, and moved to Kendal-on-Hudson in 2014. Stefan attended New York University and served in an army intelligence unit during the Korean War. He worked as a film critic, book critic and senior editor at Time Magazine for over 20 years. After retiring from Time, he became the drama critic for the New Leader and covered arts, culture and politics for the City Journal, Wall Street Journal and many other publications. A Literary Lions honoree, he is the author of 16 published books, countless articles, and numerous songs, plays, essays and reviews. Maintaining an active writing life even in his later years, Stefan still found time to attend round table lunches with his colleagues in Manhattan, mentor and support younger writers, play the ukulele and musical saw, and hold concerts and film presentations at Kendal-on-Hudson. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy May Kanfer; daughter, Lilian Castle, son-in-law, Andrew Castle, son, Ethan Kanfer, daughter-in-law, Daniela Kanfer, granddaughter, Lea Castle and her husband, Officer Tim Novak, granddaughter, Alyssa Castle and her partner, Tucker Hill. A memorial service for friends and colleagues is planned for mid-autumn, to be held in New York City. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stefan's memory may be made to the Audubon Society (Audubon.org).
