SYLVIA SHERMAN Obituary

SHERMAN--Sylvia, died peacefully on December 28, 2012 at The Osborn in Rye, NY. Proudly born in Brooklyn, NY on May 9, 1916. Sylvia graduated from Brooklyn College in 1937 with a degree in history and earned a Master's Degree in Education from St. John's University in 1969. She lovingly taught first and second graders for 18 years in the NYC public schools in Astoria, Queens. Predeceased by her loving husband of 53 years, Michael, and her beloved sister Lillian. She is survived by her adoring sons Peter (Nancy Schnur), Joel (Karyn), and Bruce (Cynthia). She will be missed by her grandchildren Erik (Tara), Lori Shaer (Jon), Randi Stanley (Dave), Kyra Gonzalez (Carlos), Rachel, Daniel, and Laura. Her great-grandchildren Julia and Katherine Sherman, Benjamin and Madeline Shaer, and Hannah and Joshua Stanley brought her smiles and joy. Sylvia also leaves her devoted personal aide Joan Riley. Joan cared for Sylvia for over 10 years with compassion and love, ensuring that she was comfortable and beautiful at all times. Sylvia will be remembered for her intelligence, kindness, and generosity. She was truly a friend to all and loved by those who were fortunate enough to know her. Graveside memorial services on Sunday, December 30th at 2:00pm at Sharon Gardens, Valhalla, NY. Family will receive friends at 55 Sycamore Road, Scarsdale, NY following the service and on Monday, December 31st from noon to 3:00pm.
