Dave was a highly valued colleague at Becker and contributed significantly to the growth and success of the Private Investment operations. My friend Amos Hostetter has often mentioned Dave's professionalism.

Joan -
My entire family shares in the loss of David who touched my life in so many ways. He was an early mentor to me in the industry, a tenacious colleague in the fight against HIV/AIDS, an industry pioneer whose financial structuring helped so many get started and fund the industry's expansion. He will be missed. With appreciation and Love, John

Dear Joan: I heard of your terrible loss when in Cornwall last week and want to send you and your daughters my deepest sympathy. I know you as such a close family and David was such a warm, wonderful presence. We had such fun with you all in Turkey after the wedding, what a great memory. My thoughts are with you and your family.

It was a privilege and a pleasure to both know and work with David Wicks.
David made a huge contribution to Cable Positive that few people truly appreciate. His early and unflagging support for the fight against HIV/AIDS brought several very tangible results to the cause. First and foremost was his passion to always do the right thing, whether on the individual, organizational, social or cultural level. He would weigh the facts carefully, and when he was persuaded of their soundness, became a tireless advocate. It was David's work with the leadership of Cablevision Systems and The Wiz (at that time), that resulted in an enormous gift of Cable Positive's first, six, State of the art desktop computers and printers, saving the industry's non-profit AIDS organization thousands of dollars. It was David's advocacy from his position on Cable Positive's Board, that persuaded The Wiz management to donate $100,000 in equipment, television monitors and desktops to Downstate Medical Center's HIV/AIDS Women's and Children's Center--a gift that helped transform a dark, dreary clinic in the heart of Brooklyn, NYC, into a bright, welcoming place where children and their parents could get compassionate care--and still do, a full-decade after the gift was made. And, it was David's leadership and the enormous respect he received from the Dolan Family, that converted the Dolans into enormously strong supporters of Cable Positive's work, helped us bring the Annual Fundraising Dinner to the level of over $1.5 million, and even contributed to Chuck Dolan's wearing a "Rockabilly" outfit to the Cable Positive Benefit Dinner honoring Jim Dolan. Cablevision's strong support of Cable Positive also sent a solid signal to other cable systems of all sizes, that leveraging their vast resources to fight a critical public health problem was simply the responsible thing to do. Having David Wicks conveying that message, with his powerful credibility within the financial community, was of great, great importance to Cable Positive's growth and acceptance by elements of the cable industry that had not traditionally supported the organization's work.
David was a trusted and solid confidant to me and to all Cable Positive Board members, and it was his work with the Dolan Family Foundation that enabled Cable Positive to play a key role at the UN International HIV/AIDS Film Festival, held in Cannes, France, in 2005, and with MTV International. David participated in the crafting of two of Cable Positive's three strategic plans, and always asked the critical questions of "What's in the best interest of the organization?", and "What is the most effective tactic to use to fight the disease?"
But, beyond the specifics of how David helped Cable Positive bloom, was his steady, measured presence on the Board and at many key Executive Committee meetings over the year. All of us, from staff to Board members, knew we could trust David's advice and organizational instincts, and we knew that his commitment to Cable Positive and the battle against HIV/AIDS was unshakeable. Even after David had technically left the employ of the Cable industry, his commitment and passion for the work of Cable Positive continued unabated. He knew, through his work on the Board of the Visiting Nurse Association of NY, that Cable Positive's work was not restricted to industry boundaries, but indeed, was focused on improving the quality of life for people who were HIV positive, and through education and awareness, at giving people the tools they needed to prevent infection.
David's life, and his willingness to go to the wall for who and what he believed in, is a testament to how one individual can make an dramatic difference in the lives of others, and by so doing, make the world a kinder, more compassionate place. Our lives were all enriched by knowing and working with David Wicks, and I am grateful for the experience.
