My heart is broken. I had known Steven since I was 10. He was a brilliant and funny man. I always admired his courage to go far and push himself. He was a good friend to my brother and a wonderful best man to him. He will truly be missed by my family. We love him dearly and may G-d rest his soul. My heart goes out to Ken and Fran and Laurie. My deepest condolences.

To Steven's family I send my sincere condolences. I only met Steven once, at a research seminar in Liverpool in 2011, but on that one occasion he proved to be a supportive and engaging presence. He was passionate about his work on the Shuar people and encouraging about my research. I am sorry that this would be our only meeting, as I enjoyed chatting with him.

I was a graduate student of Steve's at Ohio University; further, I was so impressed by his class on field research that I requested that he be my thesis mentor despite the fact that I was in the Southeast Asian and not Latin American studies program. Steve was more than an academic mentor: he was also a friend. I am not only a brighter, more educated person for having known him, but have more compassion for humanity and a greater appreciation for life in general due to his warmth and approachability. Steve was an A+ professor, a supportive friend, and I will forever miss our riveting, laughter-filled conversations. Blessings on all friends and family.

I met Steve in Sucua when he first arrived for his fieldwork with the Shuar, he then used to stay with me in Quito for his 'outs'. He was a wonderful anthropologist, always passionately concerned about the Shuar, and also a good friend with a big heart. I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of his passing. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying I'll miss a truly lovely friend. My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

Steve was a great great anthropologist, and friend. We only recently learned of his death. Our daughters know him as the guy who ate beetles in Ecuador. Peace to family and friends.

I was a colleague and friend of Steve's at Ohio University. I was so very shocked and sorry to hear of his passing. Steve was a passionate scholar and teacher who challenged himself and all around him to see beyond our cultural assumptions. I enjoyed so much our conversations and felt tremendous support from him as a colleague. I find it difficult to fathom the academic community without him. He will be missed by so many. My deepest condolences go to his family, freinds, students, and colleagues.

My wife, Amanda Konradi, was a colleague of Steve's at Ohio University before we relocated to Baltimore. We shared good food, drink and conversation with Steve on many occassions while living in Athens. The last time we saw Steve was about 6 or 7 years ago when he passed through on his way to visit his sister. I thought of him this weekend when we lit the yahrzeit for my mother. We will keep him in our thoughts and hearts.

To the family. Losing someone who has being a part of your life for so many years must be very difficult. May it help to ease the hurt you feel now to know that others care and are thinking of you at this sad time. With deepest sympathy. (Psalms 61:3)
