SHEEHAN--Dr. Peter. An internationally respected force in the field of diabetes, died on May 16. He was 60 years old and was in health care management discussions with the government of Jamaica at the time of his death. The son of Dr. George Sheehan and Mary Jane Sheehan, Peter pioneered a multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment of diabetes, focusing on diet, exercise, and life-style changes. He graduated from Antioch College and received his MD from SUNY Downstate School of Medicine. He also completed a fellowship in endocrinology at the Yale University School of Medicine. After serving as Director of the Diabetes Treatment Center at Staten Island University Hospital, he became Medical Director of a new Diabetes Foot and Ankle Clinic at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City and then was a senior faculty member at the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. He was appointed to the Board of directors of the American Diabetes Association and became the President of the New York City board which partnered with Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the City's first anti-obesity campaign. He called diabetes "the Hurricane Katrina of American healthcare." Dr. Sheehan had founded Sheehan Health Management, a consulting firm which emphasized the comprehensive interdisciplinary approach to diabetes. He helped develop the world class diabetes clinic at Sanford Health Center at USD in Sioux Falls South Dakota. Peter Sheehan was a beloved human being with an infectious sense of humor and a deep understanding of and affection for people from all walks of life. His friends and family loved his razor like wit and his jokes. He is survived by his wife Nadege and their son Patrick and three children from a previous marriage, Caitlin, Peter, and Nora, and all of his six brothers and five sisters.
