MJ GLADSTONE Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 15, 2015.
GLADSTONE--M.J. (Mike),

publisher, editor, designer, and historic preservationist, died on February 13. Mr. Gladstone was born in New York City in 1923, attended public schools there and received an MA in Fine Arts from Harvard in 1946. He did superb work in publishing and the arts throughout his professional life. He apprenticed at the Elm Tree Press in Woodstock, VT, worked as art and illustrations editor for Merriam-Webster, as advertising manager for Yale University Press, and participated in the early days of mail order publishing at George Braziller, Columbia Records, and McGraw Hill. He headed publications for the Museum of Modern Art and for Arno Press. Mr. Gladstone was a publications consultant to the New York State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Twentieth Century Fund, Commentary magazine, and the Preservation League of New York State. He served briefly as Director of the Museum of American Folk Art and was the author of a book on roadside American folk art, A Carrot for a Nose, published by Scribner. In 1973 he founded the Publishing Center for Cultural Resources, to help nonprofit institutions become effective publishers. In the late 80's, Mike moved from Manhattan to Columbia County where he lived with the art historian Mary Black in the historic Rockefeller Tavern, which together they restored. In his later years, he worked as senior consultant to Furthermore (a program of the J.M. Kaplan Fund) on their grants in publishing. He was an active volunteer, board member, and leading force of local non-profits including Historic Hudson, Hudson River Heritage, Hudson Opera House, the Columbia County Historical Society and the Hudson Valley Chamber Music Circle. Mr. Gladstone was married twice; to Doria Higgins, and to Diane Brooks, with whom he had two children. He is survived by his daughter Abby Yozell, her husband John, and their daughter, Esme; and by his son Charles, his wife Elaine Souza, and their daughter, Lucy Gladstone. A memorial occasion will be held this month at the Hudson Opera House. Contributions in Mike's memory may be made to Historic Hudson, Hudson River Heritage, Hudson Opera House, or the Border Terrier Club of America.

This is uncanny, not because it comes as a reminder of Mike's passing, but just yesterday while walking along the back road toward the river next to where Mike lived on Joan's property, I paused for a moment, looking through the leafless woods at Mike's small abode, to give thought to Mike and our wonderful conversations together. I thought about how time passes and friends and family to do and fleeting our lives seem to be. This morning, this reminder pops up in my inbox.

Mike was a thoughtful and kind man who lived through the woods next door to our hand built house. I eagerly watched the progress of his silo-living room as he built it and, later over the years, enjoyed many impromptu visits in his octagonal living room. I marveled at his skillful choice of words spoken in a quiet voice, revealing a great mind and heart. And what a wonderful smile.

Mike possessed a refined intellect, a marvelously dapper sense of style, an entrancing personality. The worlds of historic preservation and fine art are fortunate indeed to have had so fine a champion. His is an inimitable legacy and he will be greatly missed.

Much of what I am today is traceable to Mike's influence, presence, advice, and counsel. He touched so many lives.
He taught me books and publishing, and to tie a real bow tie when I joined the Publishing Center in the early 1980s. The offices were in the old Newsweek building on West 42 Street. I cherish this man, and to this day wear some of his neckgear.

Sincere condolences to Mike's family and many friends. He was always charming, very modest of his talent and achievements and always good fun. Ar deis De go raibh a anam.

My condolences to Abby, Charles and their families. Mike was a brilliant tastemaker and historian of design and introduced me to various overlapping worlds, the warmest of them personified by the incomparable Mary. (I was a Publishing Center "alum" 1980-82 and a friend 1980-88).

Michael was a dear friend to the Schreckinger family through all sorts of changing times that began in the early 1970's and went on into the middle 90's.
His graceful way and manner were exemplary.
Our condolences to Abby, Charles and family
