I spent three summers during 1966-70 with the Weller family when Captain George Weller was attorney with the Coast Guard, based on Governors Island, New York. I was a college friend of his daughters, Karen and Valerie, at St Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana, and was welcome with open arms by the entire family (Captain George Weller, Mom Alice, Steve, Karen, Valerie and Suzanne, and grandmother California'). Captain Weller would sit at the head of the table at dinner, and engaged us in all kinds of witty political and social discourse. He exemplified the American ideals of openness, acceptance, and achieving your dreams. The family house seemed to expand with the number of people Captain and Mrs. Weller's hearts opened to, including several foreign students from Europe. We woke up to the sound of the Coast Guard bugle, and Mom Alice ready to send us off to work with our breakfast order of eggs, muffin, and sausage We returned home after a hectic day at our summer jobs via Coast Guard ferry, Captain Weller making sure that we kids' leave again after dinner, for an evening at Central Park's free Shakespeare plays, or shows at Radio City. It was a rich and beautiful experience that I was privileged to be a part of. For you, Captain Weller, it is: Those who have given of themselves to others will live forever in every single heart they have touched.

My wife Amy and I knew George and Alice from St. John's Student Parish and I worked with George at the Michigan Attorney General's Office. George was always an inspiration to me. He was always positive and supportive. He was never afraid to act on his convictions or speak up when necessary. He and Alice went horseback riding in the back country of Ireland at a time his contemporaries were sitting in their rocking chairs. He will be remembered and cherished by all ho knew him.

Having worked with George for many years at the Attorney General's Office, I wish to offer my condolences and prayers to George's loving family. He was a truly remarkable man. His legal briefs in particular were legendary for their wit, persuasiveness, and creative originality. I was blessed to have known and worked with him.

I would add kindness to his list of virtues. Glad I had an opportunity to meet him.
