Our beloved "Oma," died at age 95 on September 1 in St. Louis. The "Queen of St. Louis Fundraising" left her mark on the city she loved by founding a wide range of civic institutions: the Greater St. Louis Book Fair, ScholarShop, the Gypsy Caravan, Little Shop Around the Corner, Wishing Well, Forest Park Forever, First Street Forum, the Newman Money Museum at Washington University, the Butterfly House at Faust Park, and many others. Leaving college early to marry, she always said she attended "the University of Eric Newman" (later receiving an honorary doctorate from University of Missouri-St. Louis). Eric and Evelyn, our "Opa and Oma," made an inspiring couple through 75 years of pun-filled marriage and adventure, traveling to almost 200 countries and gathering together generations of family in St. Louis, their Mississippi River bluff house in Alton (Illinois), Pango Pango (Jamaica), and Martha's Vineyard. Recently, she started "The Savvy Sage," a travel blog for the over-80 set. Oma is survived by Opa, daughter Linda Schapiro, son Andy Newman (Peggy), brother Julian Edison (Hope), her five grandchildren, Josh (Geula), Dan (Amber), Abigail (Jason), Tony (Meredith), and Kate (David), and 10 great-grandchildren, all of whom will always cherish her boundless energy, creativity, and curiosity. She requested no mourning or service and that people who wish to celebrate her life should donate to their favorite local charities.
