Just adding a correction to my recently submitted post. I meant to write earthly instead of earthy.
Rest in peace, John

John was a year ahead of me in grammar school. He was in my brother“s class. The nuns stopped him from singing in church on Sundays because they said he overpowered everyone. Something like that. So he was forced to sit and be quiet. I love that memory and how he used his creative gift. I imagine him singing with angels now. Rest in peace always, John, but keep singing. Sincere condolences to all missing his earthy presence.

I had the great fortune of meeting this artist on three occasions. We have a mutual friend. Un dottor de la mia sorte. We will miss this fine person. The performances were glorious but afterward he was so genuine and charming. My thoughts to his family - he was so dedicated to them

John Del Carlo and I go way back to our days in George Washington High School (circa 1965-1968). He got his acting and singing bug when he got the lead role in our high school production of Oklahoma! He was Curly and I was Ali Hakim. A few days before our performances were scheduled, he came down with appendicitis, and never got to do the show! He was devastated. Lucky for us he was not undeterred. After high school he went on to San Francisco's Academy of Music, and started with the Merola Opera Company. Always following where he was singing, I managed to catch a PBS airing of Boheme last December, and we touched bases. His busy schedule, whether in San Francisco at the Opera Company, or San Diego, Seattle, or New York, to name a few, precluded our getting together for a reunion -- but he was always thought of, and will always be thought of. A great guy, no doubt a terrific father, a good friend to all who crossed his paths, and a consummate opera singer with a legacy that will live on for aspiring bass-baritones listening to CDs featuring him.
