I haven't seen Joan for many, many years, but I am sure a few basic traits stayed with her. She had the sort of easy, unshowy self-confidence that puts people in the natural aristocracy of the race. She glimmered, with no visible cord or cause. When she tossed her head and grinned toothily it made you glad to be nearby. I'm happy to learn that she accomplished so much in the last ten years, grieved that I came to know through this notice and guest book.

I will continue to pray for the family and many friends of Joan. As a mother myself, I can not imagine how diffiuclt it must have been to remain strong and positive for her husband and children. Joan was a vision of joy and peace for so many people. I am sure we will all cherish our memories of the time we spent with her. Although her death brings tears to my eyes, her photo makes me smile. Love always, Lori (Carolina Friends School-1969-1979)

My condolences to all of you. Joan was a beautiful, warm, caring person. I felt it a great honor to know her. She was a very brave woman and I will miss her light.
May your love and memories of Joan help you through this time.

Although having only known Joan for the past two years or so (when I was called upon to provide pool & spa service for the family) I can honestly say that I have never met anyone even remotely like her before in my life. A genuinely kind and loving person and a remarkable mother to all four of her children. I could actually feel the serenity & happiness of her and Chris's home each week when I arrived to perform my services. I'll never forget the last time that I spoke with her as she was having difficulty standing but was concerned as to how I was doing. A truly unbelievable person that it was my good fortune to have known if only briefly.

I have many joyous memories of Joan from high school, chief among them all of us teasing Joan for her unique style of sprinting across a dance floor, and her great ability to join in that fellowship of laughing at our adolescent selves.

Joan was a wonderful, mature and enlightened soul.
Growing up together in North Carolina, she drank Perrier before I realized water could be carbonated, let alone from France.
I agree with John that her laughter was infectious and cool and confident.
She was really lovely and the world is a lesser place without her.

Among my most vivid memories of Joan, from her days as a student at Carolina Friends School, is her wonderful laugh. It was a delight to hear, and it was powerfully contagious. She seemed to me often to be at the center of a group of friends, all of them caught up in some hilarity. When I saw the photograph of Joan here, it was that laugh of hers that I heard again.
My thoughts are with her family in this sad time,
John

Although we haven't seen Joan since she was a little girl, running down the hall with Anne and Will on the seventh floor in Phipps House, we have admired her career, her family and her courage. Our thoughts are with her family, particularly Ed and Ginny who we know as her greatest champions.

To all who have lost Joan, my heart goes out to you at this time. I, too, will miss her greatly. She was a wonderful person and loving friend, always caring for others before herself- even in her last days. She has made me a better person.

I didn't know Joan personally, but I know of her brave battle with cancer through the years via my dear friend, Joan's sister Anne.
Joan sounded like a truly remarkable woman. The way she lived and fought and loved made her a hero to me.
My thoughts are with the entire family.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Joan's family and friends, as I just learned of her passing in this morning's NYT.
I remember Joan from our time at Carolina Friends School during our high school years, wearing her leg warmers, with an ever-present can of Tab in hand.
My thoughts are with you.
