Elizabeth Federman Obituary

FEDERMAN--Elizabeth (Betty). Columbia University Medical Center and its Board of Visitors mourn the passing of Elizabeth Federman, wife of Board of Visitors member Daniel D. Federman, M.D. Mrs. Federman trained in nursing at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she was appointed the youngest head nurse in the hospital's history. She trained generations of student nurses, Harvard medical students, and interns and residents in humane medicine. Mrs. Federman was accepted by house staff as a peer in diagnostic acuity and therapeutic sensibility and was recently honored by Harvard Medical School alumnae who paid tribute to "Betty's support of young physicians, especially women." We extend our condolences to her husband, Daniel, the Carl W. Walter Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Medical Education at Harvard Medical School, and to her children, grandchildren, and other family members. Lee Goldman, M.D. Executive Vice President for Health and Biomedical Sciences and Dean of the Faculties of Health Sciences and Medicine P. Roy Vagelos, M.D. Chairman, Board of Visitors Columbia University Medical Center

Both Betty and Dan were such a big part of my growing up, including years after I might have been considered to be an actual grownup. She made us a lot of cookie dough and always had a good serving of no-nonsense advise to go with it. She was my other mom through high school, college and medical school. I will miss her deeply even though we had not had the chance to be together for some time and I hope she is at peace now. You are all in my thoughts at this difficult time.

We have met Mrs. Federman only a few times when she was visiting Carolyn and Albert here in Illinois. We would like to send our deepest sympathy and condolences from across the miles as we will be unable to attend the memorial service.
