Thomas Tamlyn Obituary

TAMLYN--Thomas T., M.D., cardiologist and professional choir singer, died on April 26, 2009, at age 85. He graduated from Columbia College and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, served in the U.S. Public Health Service in Europe, and later was an attending physician at Roosevelt and St. Luke's hospitals. In 1969 he served on the teaching hospital ship S.S. Hope in Tunisia. For seventy-five years he was a singer and soloist in numerous choirs and choral groups, including the Columbia Chapel Choir, Calvary Church, the Canterbury Choral Society, the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, and Central Presbyterian Church. During the 1960s he was lead tenor for the Village Light Opera Group. A lifelong enthusiast of history and literature, he was fluent in German, French, Spanish, and Dutch. We will miss him and his optimistic and energetic approach to life. Survived by his wife, Ann Donaldson Tamlyn, his sister, Elisabeth T. Harris, his daughter, Lucy Tamlyn, and two sons, Thomas T. Tamlyn, Jr. and Benjamin Warfield Tamlyn. A third son, Edward Bishop Tamlyn, died in 1978. Also survived by his grandchildren, Benjamin Tamlyn Serpa, Filipa Tamlyn Serpa, and Julia Catherine Tamlyn. Memorial service at St. Bartholomew's Church, Park Ave. and 51st St., Saturday, May 16, at 4pm.
